Writer Meredith McIver Apologizes for Copied Phrases in Melania Trump’s Speech

An employee of Donald Trump’s company on Wednesday took responsibility for the passages in Melania Trump’s Monday night convention speech that were drawn from Michelle Obama’s address to the 2008 Democratic convention.

Meredith McIver, an in-house staff writer with the Trump Organization, apologized in a statement distributed by the campaign. She said the Republican presidential nominee had rejected her offer to resign.

The striking similarities between parts of Mrs. Trump’s speech and Mrs. Obama’s 2008 speech eclipsed the convention’s opening days and complicated the Republican Party’s effort to reintroduce Mr. Trump to the nation.

...doesn’t the woman have an original thought?

You look at the former model's Body by Fisher and ask that question about her thinking processes? It is to laugh...

McIver's statement plainly says Melania told McIver she admired things the Moose said and then gave those thoughts to McIver who transcribed the conversation as notes for the writing process. It appears McIver didn't know Melania was directly quoting from the Moose and then didn't run the results through a plagiarism detecting software.

For as many people that the Donald "fired" on his reality show, it astounds me McIver continues on staff. The Donald needs to get Melania a "handler" to moderate her non-political statements.

Meredith has said that Melania thinks highly of Michelle Obama

***
Wow! I was not too impressed with Melania to begin with, but that really takes it down a notch. (No matter, as I am not voting for her.)

I’m not saying I’m a political genius and I’m not the one getting all upset.

Calm down.

It’s just a theory.

Yes, couldn’t have said it better! And the reality is, we need those low-info voters to win in November, it’s just the math of it.

You’re right, that’s why it’s so important to still smoke out any moles within the Trump camp if they’re there— the Rick Astley song mocking didn’t come from Mciver, that was more clearly someone trying to publicly mock Melania. Mciver works with a big group in drafting those speeches, so it owuld’ve been easy for someone to slip that in. I don’t think this speech itself is a big deal, but it is a big deal if someone is working against them on the inside. All of us here on FR know how strong and graceful Donald and Melania are, we don’t need convincing. But we need those low-info voters just like you said. The Trump camp can’t afford any moles or saboteurs on the inside.

"I have an idea...call me crazy...but how about writing your own damn speeches."

Very few politicians write their own speeches. In this case, as best I can determine, Melania admired Moochelle (barf), and wanted to echo some sentiments from one of her speeches concerning the need for keeping ones word - sentiments that are common and banal, not high-blown rhetoric.

The speechwriter apparently didn't sufficiently re-phrase those comments (although they were not copied verbatim), leading to this "plagiarism" kerfuffle. I see this as the media awakening from its eight-year slumber; now, in the aftermath of Obama, anything Trump does will be made into a scandal. We're back to the Bush years.

Do you seriously think this watered-down act of “plagiarism” would be a story if it were a Democrat? They would be scoffing at the very notion that two similar sentences in a ten-minute speech constituted plagiarism. Don’t be a stooge and play by their rigged rules.

Not following the media, I wonder how many have brought up Biden’s history of plagiarism?

We know how the media is going to treat it. But there is no way the bill and chelsea will not be aware of the standard that has been set. Chelsea especially, she was expecting this to be a cake walk.

Then comes Hillary, all she can really do is blah blah blah blah. Trump is taking part of her base and she dreads debating him.

Bottom line, what a pukey Dem convention coming next week. our way.

Did they even bother to mention Biden's history of plagiarism?
