Writer Meredith McIver Apologizes for Copied Phrases in Melania Trump’s Speech

An employee of Donald Trump’s company on Wednesday took responsibility for the passages in Melania Trump’s Monday night convention speech that were drawn from Michelle Obama’s address to the 2008 Democratic convention.

Meredith McIver, an in-house staff writer with the Trump Organization, apologized in a statement distributed by the campaign. She said the Republican presidential nominee had rejected her offer to resign.

The striking similarities between parts of Mrs. Trump’s speech and Mrs. Obama’s 2008 speech eclipsed the convention’s opening days and complicated the Republican Party’s effort to reintroduce Mr. Trump to the nation.

She’s co-written 4-5 books of Trump’s. Probably why he wouldn’t accept her resignation.

Stupid move.

Media overuse of Michelle O’s words as if it was utterly original, and this only adds fuel to the Gotcha! feeding frenzy.

Having speeches written for you is pretty common place.

Maybe that’s why so many of our politicians suck. They can’t think for themselves.

Yup, non issue. Only a tiny % of the absolute dumbest swayable swing voters can possibly care about this enough to change their vote.

Spouse speeches have always been stupid anyhow. I mean come on. Hell I don’t even like that all candidates use speech writers in the first place, but to use them for spouses to repeat? Talk about kabuki theatre.

Yeah there’s much to be said for the chain of potential problems when a speech is written or co-authoted . Because this wasn’t ascribed will the Jack’s go scouring Trump’s books which she helped co-write to find other examples of non-ascripted sayings?

Don't underestimate the number of stupid people in this country. Look who they voted for in the past two elections.

Perhaps both were done as paraphrases of an older work... it’s a caution... McIver might not have even been aware of the Michelle Obama borrowing when she “borrowed.”

She might have done well to acknowledge the older work and that extensive quotations from it followed. This would have made Melania’s presentation more honest as well as outing Michelle’s uncredited copying.

Of course if the GOP were to apply Gotcha! back to the Dems, there could be quite a to-do.

It’s always been dumb. We trust them to run the country but then can’t expect them to talk and think about their own beliefs. The reason is the dumbest judge them on delivery, like in debates where the best technical debater is adjudged to be the most competent leader or something.

You are right, but it is still is stupid. Supposedly the dumbest 10% of voters decide national elections, the so called swing voters. The ones that vote one way and then another and then can’t give a rational reason.

So no matter the result, pub or dem, lib or con, it was decided by whoever got the 10% of dumbest voters to vote for them. Pretty grim.

Hahahaha wait til next week, when Bill Clinton has to give his speech. The optics and absolutely total difference between the genuineness of Melania and the contrived whatever bill clinton does will be such a winner for Trump.

It will be the only speech I will watch besides Chelsea’s, I want to see how she does under the pressure of being compared to the Trump kids.

That’s a good point, maybe Melania wanted the quotes in there. Some writers speculate Donald is fine with this fake controversy, because it has now raised Melania’s profile nationwide. It has caused people to subconciously think of both Michelle Obama and Melinia Trump at once, and as First Ladies.
I forgive Melania that she ‘likes’ Michelle O’s speeches. A lot of otherwise smart people were suckered into the Obamamania, at least in the first few years. Not me, EVER!

The difference will be in how the media critiques the speeches. If Bill Clinton just reads out of the phone book, you can bet the media would praise it to the gills.
