ALBANY, N.Y. — Officials at SUNY Albany cancelled the university’s basketball game with Duke University this past week in light of the New York governor’s ban on non-essential government travel to North Carolina.
As previously reported, in late March, following controversy over North Carolina’s Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, which requires those who identify as transgender to present their birth certificate before using restrooms in government buildings that correlate with their “gender identity,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned non-essential government travel to the state.
“Whereas the state of North Carolina has enacted legislation to bar transgender persons from using bathrooms and changing facilities corresponding to such persons’ gender identities,” the order read in part, “I, Andrew M. Cuomo, … do hereby order and direct all agencies, departments, boards, authorities and commissions … to bar any such publicly funded or publicly sponsored travel to such location, unless such travel is necessary for the enforcement of New York State law, to meet prior contractual obligations, or for the protection of public health, welfare, and safety.”

It’s that part of the college basketball schedule where top-tier teams like Duke schedule non-conference patsies like Albany to smack around as a warm-up to the REAL season.
The small schools play along for the money and because they can tell recruits that “you’ll get to play at Duke!”
North Carolina should retaliate in a similar manner. Or even increase the cost for New York.
Um... there was no formal agreement for this game to be played? That's unusual. Oh, well... Albany already loses 1 game, right?
No, because SUNY has decided not to include Duke in their schedule. The game wasn’t scheduled until November.
Oh, please reconsider SUNY. Your basketball team can use any bathroom they like. Bring a trailer with a unisex bathroom, and your pansies won’t wilt in the southern sun...
And it’s a pretty good payday for the smaller teams. Average is somwhere between half a mil or better. If they were contracted to play and have no real excuse then they may end up owing Duke some money. I guess Albany has plenty of cash just laying around. I don’t know if full schedules are out yet but Duke will have an easier time finding a replacement team than Butthurt U will.
