Newt: It's a 'Betrayal' If Cruz Doesn't Endorse Trump During Convention Speech

Newt Gingrich spoke with Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren live from Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena on Day One of the RNC convention Monday night. At the beginning of their conversation, they addressed the controversy around who is and who isn’t present at the convention as the Republican Party gets ready to crown Donald Trump their 2016 nominee.

At least one speaker, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), has yet to endorse the GOP nominee. Susteren asked Gingrich if he believed Trump’s former presidential opponent would finally announce his support for Trump during his speech Wednesday night.

“Well I hope he does” endorse him, Gingrich said.

If he doesn’t?

“I think it’ll be sad,” Gingrich said. “It’ll be a betrayal.”

Considering Cruz is getting ready to head back to the Senate, Gingrich argued it would be in Cruz’s best interests to be on Trump’s good side.

“He knows it’s helpful to Trump that he’s here,” he said. “At the same time, he’s going back to the Senate. This is a significant step in this direction."

As for Ohio Gov. John Kasich and his staff, who have refused to attend this week’s convention, Gingrich said they “seem to be in their own world.”

For the sake of a once well thought of conservative, I hope you're right.

I was a Cruz supporter and I still think he would have been a fine choice for the white house...

I also think he would be a damned fool not just to fully endorse Trump, but to give him a ROUISING speech of strong support at the convention.!

Cruz knows how important it is that Hillary gets nowhere near the white house. The appointments of the Supreme Court are critical to the survival of the USA....

If Cruz is not willing to swallow his pride and forget his bruised ego and do the right thing....well, then he's not worth his salt....

He signed a formal pledge. It was co-signed by the Chairman of the RNC as a witness. No small matter there. He has until Wednesday night to save his name and honor.

If Cruz doesn't want to endorse Trump, but does so only because he is being embarrassed into doing it, then Cruz shouldn't do it

He should do it if only because he signed a pledge that he would.

Pledge, pledge.
Signed, signed.

He took marriage vows too, but It seems he doesn't honor those either.

Cruz’s “smarts” are highly over rated.

Yup! Kinda like Hillary is the smartest woman in the world...

You're right, but those vows were/are between him and God. Ted Cruz's were/are between him and us. Big difference.

If all presidential elections are rigged having Cruz slam Trump will accomplish four things:

It will destroy Cruz but he’s too stupid to see it because he truly believes God wants him to be president, just apparently not this year.

It will hand Trump a loss.

It will give Hillary a win.

It will be used as an excuse for Trump losing.

Anybody get a recorded call from Cruz today?
Says he will be speaking at convention, wants to fight for Liberty, secure the borders...blah, blah, blah.....says he will be running for re-election of senate seat and you will be getting a call in the next few days from his campaign to ask for donation. “Please give and watch me at the convention” was the basic message.

I bet he won’t mention Trump and his speech will be all about him. I am not going to watch his Ted infomercial.

I really get a big laugh out of these self important, pretentious a-holes who think they are better than us. True conservative values - ha! Are those the ones where the half breed gets everything he wants from a compliant RINO House and Senate?

For these faux-Conservatives, being "conservative" means NEVER EVER doing anything to offend or upset any Democrat constituency, and bending over and doing what the Dems say.
