How does a coup start with rolling tanks into the capital and not with an assassination/decapitation strike first? I would think that would be the priority.

A comparison with July 1944 coup attempt in Germany is in order. I think for now the Turks are doing better, but one fundamental is that Erdogan (like 1944 Hitler) still has very strong support.

>>I wonder if the army is finally acting as the Protector of the Republic as specified in the Constitution.

Taking it off the trajectory towards Islamic state-establishment and restoring the secular Republic.

That would be nice.

Maybe in a few years American revolutionaries could borrow that model/army (whilst what’s left of the military industrial establishment here is getting its nails done and figuring out which latrine to use).

Just out ...

The President spoke tonight by phone with Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss the events in Turkey. The President and Secretary agreed that all parties in Turkey should support the democratically-elected Government of Turkey, show restraint, and avoid any violence or bloodshed. The Secretary underscored that the State Department will continue to focus on the safety and security of U.S. citizens in Turkey. The President asked the Secretary to continue to keep him updated as the situation unfolds

Oh! So those might have been policemen? If those huge crowds are for Erdogan, I don’t think this coup is doing well....

Can someone check on BLM and make sure they haven't all spontaneously combusted from lack of attention?

Must be tough for them. Earlier today I saw a story where certain BLM lost souls are flying to Brazil to try to upstage the Olympics. Maybe we can get their plane rerouted to Ankara...

They well may be but I would not put money on the PoPo over the military.

My take on it is it will boil down to how much of the military is actually supporting this coup.he

“Does the red flag with crescent moon on it signify Erdogan supporters?”

Hope this does not end with the use of piano wire.

Timing highly coincidental with secretive strange Kerry visit to Moscow and meeting with Putin?

Is Turkey worth World War III?

CNN point was just that the evidence doesn't support a conclusion as for how the Turkish public (in the streets) is reacting. The Turkish military is seen, internally, as professional and protective of democracy. Some Turks are apt to be against democracy and for Sharia.

Apparently those in charge of the coup have been speaking out too, I assume to comfort the public.

WH did release a statement - all parties should support Erdogen regime.

Which means "support radical Islamism", just what you'd expect from this administration.

Well, you got ‘this’ on one hand and ‘that’ on the other.
That is: Erd is good for some things and bad on others for Obama. I think Obama sees him as a net ‘good’.

The thought has occurred to me, that perhaps Erdogan has orchestrated this himself, in order to further consolidate his power.

Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I’ll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah

But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down

with apologies to morons, of course.

In 100% of the issues that I took a shine to (which means I studied the law, arguments on both sides, evidence as presented by both sides, etc.), Obama has been on the wrong side. Obama is a revolutionary.
