They are shooting into crowds from copters. They also may have no choice -- Erdogan has still very strong popular support ( more in Ankara than in Istanbul ) and the crowds contain large number of "Allahu Akhbar" people... the people who like being martyred.

Oh, good. For a moment I thought Erdogan would survive.
Not formally, not yet, but CNN reported what I typed, I didn't pull it out of the air. CNN report was that Kerry and Obama had been in contact, and Obama was in facvor of the democratically elected government, i.e., Erdogen, and by extension, he is against the military.

If this coup succeeds, the US will recognize the new government even though it has not gained power by democratic means. At that point, it will be more obvious that the US approves.

Head of their Navy called Kerry. He is against the coup.
