The Senate's Only Black Republican Opens Up About Being Mistreated by Cops
Atlantic ^ | 7/15/16

Tim Scott of South Carolina is the only black Republican in the United States Senate. This week, moved by police killings of Eric Garner, Walter Scott, and Philando Castile, he rose to the floor to deliver a moving speech about his personal history being stopped by law-enforcement officers for what amounted to driving while black. “While I thank God that I have not endured bodily harm,” he declared, “I have felt the pressure applied by the scales of justice when they are slanted. I have felt the anger, the frustration, the sadness, and the humiliation that comes from feeling that you are being targeted for nothing more than being just yourself.

I don’t believe you.

When the cop goes to pull someone over, the first thing they do is call the station with information about the vehicle. That way they can find out if the car is stolen or has an APB on it or whatever.

There’s no doubt in my mind that a cop knows if they’re pulling over a politician or not.

All this said: politicians are seldom held accountable for major violations of the law (see Hillary Clinton). Minor violations, forget it.

Not being black, what kind of racist thing was going on all those times I was stopped by the cops and didn’t get a ticket.

” I have felt the anger, the frustration, the sadness, and the humiliation that comes from feeling that you are being targeted for nothing more than being just yourself.””

You mean like BLM targets whitey? The police?

I believe it. But I do not believe it has to do with just targeting blacks. I believe it has to do with experience, crime statistics, which all combined, equals fear and wariness. The black community needs to realize that there is a reason more blacks are prosecuted and imprisoned, it is because they commit more crime proportionally. The liberal politicians that run these cities, must clean up these places that produce rampant crime, but they won’t. They will just continue to blame whitey and continue to pander for votes.

I love Tim Scott. Real conservative. If you disparage him, you are seriously a racist.

I’m not so sure that Scott’s proposed solution isn’t far off the mark: Separate traffic enforcement duties from law enforcement duties. I’ve seen the reputation of law enforcement tarnished by the likes of traffic cops who park at the bottom of a long hill with a radar gun or even bait people into speeding. Revenue collector for the nanny state should not be part of their job description.

Well, say this is a legitimate problem, I don’t doubt that some profiling goes on simply because of the massive amount of crime that blacks commit. He complains that this causes innocent blacks to feel “pressure”.

That’s a shame, but I’ve never seen a black person worry themselves about the “pressure” that whites feel when they are alone on a city street or train car with feral black youths. That kind of pressure often leaves white people dead or seriously injured, whereas most of the pressure blacks feel from police is going to end up simply inconveniencing them, if they aren’t criminals and they don’t start fighting with the police.

When I see black people showing some sympathy for the dead white people they leave in their wake, I’ll start showing some sympathy for the inconvenienced black people that police leave in their wake.

Everyone is too sensitive this day and age. I am a 55 year old white man. When I was a teenager and my friends and I cruised around in our cars at night we got pulled over also. I have assumed the position many times in my life. Been asked “is that pot I smell” when there was nothing to smell. Why? Because back then and even now if you get a bunch of teenage boys together, no matter their race, you have a chance that something bad is going to happen. Did it piss me off back then, yes, but I learned a valuable lesson also. Don’t have an attitude when questioned by the cops or your parents and most likely you will be fine.

We need to accept the fact that cops DO profile people and to me SHOULD profile people. When gray haired old ladies are causing most of the crime then I would expect them to be pulled over and questioned more often.

We should all be up in arms when a cop truly goes rogue but the BLM movement is once again a media creation where they all seem to pick the wrong people to demonstrate for (Michael Brown was a thug) and ignore people we should all fight for. Tim Scott should note issues he has had but he should not play into BO and the media’s game plan to basically cause a race war.

“...Separate traffic enforcement duties from law enforcement duties....”

They are one in the same. They are inseparable. A police officer's profession and job is LAW ENFORCEMENT no matter what he is doing.

Like the unmarked car that tailgates you until you speed up to put some safe distance there, then pulls you over?

Yeah, I don’t get the responses here. Nothing Scott said is inflammatory, and furthermore, he has credibility.

I also forgot that 2 years ago, so a 53 year old white man with short hair conservatively dressed, I am at a gas station near my house that is not open early but the pumps are on so I am pumping gas for the day and the local police pull in and hit me with the spotlight and ask me what I am doing. Did I think it was totally stupid, did I think he was bothering me? Yes to both but I did not get in his young face, did not lecture him on his attitude, did not threaten to call the Chief of Police, no I said officer I am pumping gas, he said oh I did not realize they left the pumps on, we went our separate ways.

And I have been stopped more than Tim Scott but I have to admit I was speeding or I did have a light out. So don’t throw those times into your total. Talk about the few that were profiling but acknowledge that you are probably profiled because black males perform most of the crime in the US.
