Dallas: Black Man Falsely Placed in Grave Danger for Exercising his Second Amendment Rights

Understandably buried in the avalanche of news coming out of Dallas is the story of Mark Hughes, an attendee at the rally, who was falsely singled out as the original suspect in the sniper killings because he was seen at the rally openly carrying a weapon.
Original Dallas PD Tweet: https://www.google.com/search?q=mark+hughes+dallas+pd+tweet&espv=2&biw=1600&bih=775&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjbuLLM-eTNAhXMo5QKHVPhAnQQ_AUIBygC#imgrc=5pfDkS9uXyFUSM%3A
One can only imagine the degree of danger that this tweet put Mr. Hughes in, and luckily for him, he was both smart enough to think to immediately turn over his gun and then himself to the authorities and he was lucky enough to encounter police officers who managed to keep their cool in what had to be an unimaginably stressful and tense circumstances for them.

Rights not exercised are rights soon lost. This man did everything right. He carried legally, and when police announced they were looking for him he contacted them. He was legally carrying before the shooting started. Although he and I may disagree on the BLM issue, we are in complete agreement on the 2nd amendment. Not knowing his background, I consider him, at the very least, a 2nd amendment Patriot. I saw many people open carry long guns (which is legal in Texas) at numerous Tea Party rallies. If he loses his 2A rights, I lose mine.

Well stated and I agree 100%

I urge all people with licenses to carry a gun, to get one of these and show it upon any encounter with a Law Officer.

Yes, he did everything right. The problem is that many people during a event start imagining things. The police said that several people witnessed him firing his weapon.
California cracked down on open carry back under Reagan. The Black Panthers started exercising their rights with open carry and the public and Reagan got the heebie-jeebies.

Interesting.
Obviously an effective weapon but not one the anti-gunners leap to condemn.

You get that with your CCW permit (hate using the term “permit”)? All we get here in Pennsylvania is a laminated card with goofy looking picture on it.

If you take a gun to a gunfight, don’t be surprised if you’re considered a participant.

Perfect example of how aware and well-trained legal gun owners are and why it is so important for as many citizens as possible to be responsible gun owners. If all of the black lives lost to police violence had been as cooperative and took preventive action as this man did, they would all be alive today.

California is exactly what I don't want Texas to become. I would hate to lose my rights because someone else legally exercised theirs. It appears that many people disagree with me. A right is an endowment from God that is guaranteed by the State. The more those 2 are flipped, the less free we are.
To: DJ Taylor
I agree with you.
I totally support open and concealed carry but there are places where concealed is the better choice.
A demonstration with high potential for violence is not my idea of where to openly carry.

My opinion on that is that one should not openly carry a long arm just because one can but if an individual feels that they require an openly carried long arm to be safe, they most certainly should. They might be wiser to just avoid such a situation entirely however which is why I will be skipping the RNC next week. Things are officially out of fecking control.

And it wasn’t really a sniper attack either. Snipers don’t operate like that.

So you are telling me that a black man was open carrying a semi-automatic rifle, approached a police officer with it and wasnt shot dead on the spot? Yes that is what happened. The young man conducted himself in a way that the police could see he wasn't a threat.

How would a cc weapon holder be able to shoot a sniper? How to see him? would a hand gun be effective? etc.
Plus, in a volatile situation like in Dallas, regularly people shooting weapons along with bad people shooting, and cops getting killed, would be stupid and utterly counter productive. How on earth would cops know a “good” shooter from a “bad” one?
