When I go to the local WalMart in Yuma (there are three), I check to see if there is any .22 ammunition. At some point, increased production and falling demand should cross, allowing for more .22 on the shelves. At the WalMart on Frontage road, toward the Foothills, I was surprised to see .22 ammunition. It was the first time in three years.
There were 2,300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags and 1,000 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity. The Mini-Mags were in plastic 100 round boxes at $7.47 a box. The Standard Velocity were in paper, 50 round boxes at $3.47 a box.
A perky, pretty clerk, Yittzel, was happy to answer my questions. She was a joy to deal with, and did not have any problem with me taking pictures. She said that they seldom saw .22 ammunition, perhaps once a month. She thought it might be coming in a little more frequently lately, but it was still uncommon. She was surprised when she came in and found .22 ammunition on the shelves that morning. She doubted if it would last more than a couple of days.
A customer came up to the counter and bought 300 rounds of CCI mini-mags, the maximum allowed. He wasn’t interested in the Standard Velocity.
He asked when Yittzel went off shift, or if he could come back in 15 minutes and buy 300 more. She told him that three boxes was the limit. I expect he came back later, when someone else was at the counter.
I asked Yittzel about ammunition availability and the effect of politics. She agreed the ammunition bubble is driven by people’s fear of potential legislation during the Obama administration.

CCI Mini-mag is the only .22lr I will purchase.
If I shoot you with 13 of them in the brain it will really piss you off.
Different guns digest different brands of ammo differently. My 10-.22 shoots Rem gold the most accurately. The speed of the bullet means nothing if it isn’t accurate. Squirrels, rabbits, even white tails, have succumbed to accurate .22 shooting. The guy you know is very lucky.

Wow! According to Walmart’s web site the only .22 available at any store within 50 miles of me is one (1) box of Winchester Hyper Velocity at the store on Elliot Road in Tempe. I may be driving to Yuma next weekend.
It actually was an intelligent post. it was in answer to a “why bother, what can you do with a 22 anyway?” post.

That’s what I will do with the ammo I don’t want, including CCI. And no, I’m not putting down CCI. I know what works for me.
Change that to never walked again.
I had the honor of serving under a sergeant that had taken 7 rounds from an AK 47. The VC and four of his pals paid dearly for that. Doesn’t make the either round any less deadly.
Already do, just for the cost savings. If you had been to a Phoenix gun show lately you would have noticed the number of CA drivers license in the customer parking lot. I imagine the Reno and Las Vegas shows are even worse. The absurd irony is that the bulk ammo company that works most Crossroad of the West gun shows is Miwall, who are based in Grass Valley in Northern CA. Miwall hauls the stuff to AZ and their customers haul it back.

About 64 years ago when we lived in the mountains of Oregon my mother shot a black bear that was trying to come through the kitchen window. She used a model 61 Winchester pump 22, dad had to pull the bear back through the window. One round hit it in the nose and the other in the left eye, it died with it’s head in the sink. When dad pulled up 2 hours later he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Federal, one box of 500 for 35 Canadian.
There’s other brands, but federal works well, I get no duds or stoppages.

Most definitely true with regular .22 ammo. Worked in an East TN ER (3rd shift) where a lot of gunshot wounds came in on our shift EVERY Friday night from a certain rural county known for moonshine & cockfighting. Watched a guy walk in ER one night bleeding from the head; his eye was started to swell. After testing, it was determined he was shot with a .22. It entered his skull & bounced around like a pinball; might as well had been a BB. That said, I wonder what the damage would had been if it had been a .22 hollow point?
I prefer CCI Stingers.

Actually, you can. It’s just a more involved and longer process than center fire ammo. If you do some searching online, you can find the company that sells the dies. There’s a few videos and articles on how to go about it.
I've studied this topic a bit. From what I can tell, a group of reloaders really threw a lot of money (and even more time) at this concept some years ago, but achieved very poor accuracy from their reloaded ammo. Applying the new priming mixture consistently seems to be the stumbling block.
If you really need something in the .22LR power range, it'd be far easier to use a small centerfire like a .22 Hornet and tinker with light loads.
