British tourists Britain visiting New York awoke Friday to news of their country's vote to leave the European Union and, in daze over the surprise outcome, had to contend immediately with effectively higher costs for everything as the pound plummeted.
"Apocalyptic," is how South London resident Greg Rowland, 49, described the referendum results while making his way through the tumult of Times Square.
One of the biggest effects for British travelers abroad was a sharp drop in the British currency. At one point on Friday, sterling fell over 11 percent to its lowest level in over 30 years, $1.3228.

While I have some sympathy for them, I do not have much regard for their intelligence.
On Thursday, preceding the results, their Pound Sterling note went for an exchange rate that ended the day at $1.49, the highest it had been since December of 2015. Given the close call of the referendum, I’d had gone out and done my best to exchange the max.
Smart travelers budget their money on an estimate of the exchange rate and that Pound Sterling had been around $1.42 just 10 days earlier, so they should have been happy to grab a windfall. Now they are on the other side, so sad, too bad!
Nah. That will remain......unfortunately. And all the other damned taxes on petrol and a pint of beer.
I had a the misfortune of taking one of my trips to Canada when the exchange rate was not favorable. I was young then, and learned to check out exchange rates when traveling to another country.
99% chance they did. Article is likely just making it up.
Would YOU travel to a foreign county w/a fistfull of dollars and exchange as you go? Not likely.
Use credit card? You’d be a fool to do so. In addition to the exchange rates, CC’s add even more in fees for the bother.
Traveler’s Cheques or exchange at airport/hotel or in advance is what everyone, except illegals and refugees do.
Mr. Rowland, today you are a free man in waiting. Quit whining! I urge you to man up and work to make Brittan great again. The world would be a far far better place if the sun never set on the Brittish Empire. And I for one look forward to the re-establishment of The Brittish Empire.
Priceless...I immediately envisioned “Monty Python: Live at the Hollywood Bowl”, with Eric Idle wandering off the stage and into the audience reciting his tale of Package Holiday woe....
John Cleese got absolutely bleep raped in his divorce court. I imagine he’s a big proponent of never ever getting married again ever. (Or having a bulletproof pre-nup in place) #DonaldTrumpprenup
That probably was similar to the liberal getting mugged.
I imagine he’s about at the level of a cuckservative now.
You are right.
11% loss of value? Then, get out of expensive NYC. Idiots.
Oh, that’s very clever.
That actually sounds pretty jolly stable if this is the worst thing that happened to it in 30 years.
I think they’ve taken exaggeration lessons from that AR-15 PTSD guy, Gersh Kuntzman.
That will sexually arouse barack homobama.
If they bought $1000 for £674 at 1.4833 when they came, they could use that same $1000 to go home with £756 at 1.3228.
If they are using their credit card, yeah, purchases will cost them more.
Sounds like they're globalist pukes. If so, they must be fond of Sting's lyrics: "I'm an alien. I'm a legal alien. I'm an Enlishman in New York."
Brilliant!
I read John Cleese voted for Leave, while Eric Idle voted Remain.
My mistake- Eric Idle lives here in US and couldn’t vote. But he’s strongly in favor of Remain.
My mistake- Eric Idle lives here in US and couldnt vote. But hes strongly in favor of Remain
So, he already voted to LEAVE.
By moving to the US.
Leftists are a barrel of laughs. What toadies and fools.
That's "bum fodder" for you folk not versed in Britishisms.
