Brexit live: David Cameron to step down over EU referendum result
The Guardian ^ | 24 June 2016 | Andrew Sparrow, Matthew Weaver

Quote from Cameron

I was absolutely clear [in the referendum] about my belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the European Union. And I made clear the referendum was about this and this alone, not the future of any single politician, including myself.

But the British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.

I will do everthing I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months. But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.

This is not a decision I have taken lightly. But I do believe it’s in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required.

There is no need for a precise timetable today. But in my view we should aim to have a new prime minister in place by the start of the Conservative party conference in October.

Oh no....things move quick in British politics. There's no hanging on for ages on end, doing immense damage to your party while doing so. You lose the confidence of Parliament, or of the electorate (which ultimately is the same thing) and you're history.

For what its worth, I thought Cameron (for all his many faults) was very gracious in defeat.

Yes it does highlight some serious divisions in British society - the disparity in voting patters was very marked. Inner London was as much as 80% remain. Some other regions as much s 70% the other way.

Trump needs to be statesmanlike and say, “The citizens of the UK have made an important decision, and the American people and his administration will stand in strong support of its close ally going forward.”

He has already said exactly that.

No, but it will at the least slow the decline, at least for a while.

Actually, Britain (like Germany) has long been financing a growing portion of the debt of the truly failed economies across Europe, in an attempt to keep Europe together.

Many socialized European economies have been dependent on further financing and bailouts!

Socialist parties across Europe (including Britain’s Labor Party) are furious with these results!

The people of Britain have been feeling the financial pressure of EU debt more every year for a long time.

The rhetoric of those who have long been seeking to desovereignize individual nations around the is telling as well.

This does shake things up a bit, but the potential for Britain is greater without the debt of Europe.

I posted on another thread that I only saw one person last night mention immigration - and they thought it was key to this vote. No surprise London voted to stay; as I understand it the city is filled with “newcomers” (like NYC).

I suspect many Brits assumed that while they would pay a price for subsidizing the poorer EU nations, they also felt they’d have a leadership position and watched Germany take that instead. Besides the debt of those poorer nations (primarily in the south), I think they were fed up with having to take the Third Worlders in that had reached those southern member states...

London I think by majority voted to remain in EU.

If London is anything like major US cities, there was so much fraud in the vote that it is impossible to know what the composite London denizen really thought.

London, like any major city in America or Canada, is very socialized and dependent on government hand outs and cronyism.

Like our American cities, London’s socialized demographics have truly worked to tear apart the principles necessary for their free society to continue to exist.

The onslaught (invasion) of undocumented Muslims is also direct threat to the future of Britain.

There are many legitimate reasons for British citizens to have voted the way they did.

You may have an overall point.

Back in 1998-1999, there was a major buzz in EU countries about a single European currency kicking in, and how EU was going to be like the U.S. - a United Countries of Europe (so to speak).

Actually, the original EU (post EEC era) was established to somewhat (I say somewhat) economically rival the U.S. The other consideration was to politically unite many European countries, in case of another World War.

Of course, Europe, historically, and in many other ways, is not the U.S.

I would not be surprised if the entire EU fell on its face, in its entirety. After all, some never liked the original vision & purpose of it, to begin with.

By the way, Britain has never considered itself “Europe”. Europe is the continent of Europe and Britain is, well, traditionally known as the British Isles, west of the “Europe - the continent”.

So, the Brit independence type of thinking shouldn’t be a novelty or a surprise.

EU was NEVER a good idea.

How can it be sensible to hook yourself up with so many countries, so many economies, so many societies which exist on so many different levels... some successful, some outright bust (and right from the beginning)? Loser economies like Greece, that was limping to start out and never had any intention to reform, were IN only for what it GOT THEM.

Your chances of success and prosperity are ONLY as good as the chances for the weakest link in THAT chain.

It's illogical to expect anything else.

What do you mean that the EU was NEVER a good idea?

The EU was a good idea in its lowest level as a union of different EUropean countries, preventing war.

They should move it to a confederation type, not the ever-closing unions, and this will move that caase

So many economies etc. - come on, Alabama has a different economy than Connecticut etc.

You're conflating the EU with the Eurozone.

Maybe-but if I had a brother or nephew who wouldn’t work, who wouldn’t save, who wouldn’t even consider being gainfully employed, but who wanted to move in with me and access my savings, my checking, etc. ... would THAT be a good idea?

I disagree - while England most likely will never be great again due to the change in circumstances (for the same reason there will not be a renewed Roman Empire nor a renewed Asshur or Mittani or Prussia)

While that is there, the act of England leaving the EU will hasten the UK's and England's decline -- the British Union will end and most of the industries will move from England

the USA is great already - it's not even declining. There is "relative decline" in the sense that other nations are catching up, but not decline like Japan or the UK

England won't be great again -- see my above posts

I don’t know how it broke down by age yesterday, but for people 40+ years old the pace of the demographic changes in the West has been incredible. My children have always had immigrant children in their classrooms, so this doesn’t seem strange to them, but growing up in this same area a few decades ago the change is shocking.
