California's skyrocketing housing costs, taxes prompt exodus of residents
The San Jose Mercury News ^ | June 20, 2016 | George Avalos

During the 12 months ending June 30, the number of people leaving California for another state exceeded by 61,100 the number who moved here from elsewhere in the U.S., according to state Finance Department statistics. The so-called "net outward migration" was the largest since 2011, when 63,300 more people fled California than entered.

"The main factors are housing costs in many parts of the state, including coastal regions of California such as the Bay Area," said Dan Hamilton, director of economics with the Economic Forecasting Center at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

"California has seen negative outward migration to other states for 22 of the last 25 years."

A recent poll revealed that an unsettling sense of yearning has descended on people in the Bay Area: About one-third of those surveyed by the Bay Area Council say they would like to exit the nine-county region sometime soon.

"They are tired of the expense of living here. They are tired of the state of California and the endless taxes here," said Scott McElfresh, a certified moving consultant. "People are getting soaked every time they turn around."

I spent time in California prior to 1985. I am glad I was there and saw it when it was a great place to visit and live.

Makers moving out, takers moving in. That can’t end very well.

Thx Clintonfatigued. Still a big freakin’ state though... at one time, the annual pop. growth figure worked out to something like 120 housing starts per day (that is, domiciles of all kinds, apartments, whatever; avg occupancy 2.5).

Long before Fakeahauntas the Phoney Injun Squaw,
I had an employee receive a phone call from the (very officious) personnel lady...... she was challening his self-designation on one of her forms as “native american”
...
the conversation ended with him yelling into his phone,
“I am too a ‘native american’..I was born in St. Louis!’

(ps: legally, he had the right to so self-designate, the rule was that each person can classify themselves as they see fit)

For a while it was thought they might lose a seat last time.

Unfortunately if they do lose one, it probably won’t be a democrat that takes the hit.

This “non-partisan” redistricting is a disaster, they were actually able to draw a worse map than dem legislators would have because they didn’t mind imperiling particular dem incumbents to achieve the goal of maxing out democrat seats.

Funny, one of my brothers, 2 cousins, and a dear friend of my mother’s have moved TO Cali in recent years.
