The gun debate is also a gender war.
In all my years in journalism coming up on 30 (thanks) I have never received so much angry mail as I did after yesterday's story, "What is it like to fire an AR-15? It's horrifying, menacing and very very loud."
I don't mind spirited debate, but many correspondents told me that even expressing an opinion about today's high-powered weaponry is off-limits to those of us who don't own such guns.
To reiterate, the goal of the story was simply to share with readers my experience of firing an AR-15, which very few of them have done. I found the sheer power of the weapon horrifying. I found the noise deafening and anxiety provoking. I was frightened by its potential for rapid, catastrophic, Orlando-like carnage with similiar weaponry. Using an AR-15 made me irritable and jittery for hours afterwards. To me, it felt like a bazooka.

"Hey there Cupcake!" wrote Gary Haney. "I have never subscribed to the idea of 'gender confusion,' but after reading your article on the AR-15, I'm a believer because there is no way you and I are the same gender. You should surrender your testicles to the Department of Girlymen. I'm not sure where it's located, but your girlfriend Barack does!"
Others sent me videos of 7-, 10- and 12-year old girls firing the same weapon I fired except these kids were smiling.

Gersh Kuntzman is a pu$%^.
“...destruction made him sick...?
Wonder what destruction smells like???
If an AR15 is that rough on this poor lil guy, can you just imagine him shooting a M1 or any deer rifle from 40 years ago. That 30-06 or .308 would leave him scarred for life.
AR15 in .223 is soft.
I have never fired one in 5.56 but I suspect it is about the same
It's all about him. A doubled down 'tard.
“Kuntzman”
What an appropriate name!!!
His follow up article is hilarious! He missed the point of the criticism.
His ignorance of the subject along his reaction and analysis is precisely the antithesis of why the weapon is so popular. The AR-15 has mild recoil and as such, follow up shots are quick, easy and accurate. Most of us know that the report is not unusually loud for a rifle. In fact, compared to some of the high powered rifles, shotguns and some large caliber hand guns out there, it whispers.
Add to that the many errors reported on the function, form and mechanics of the fire arm, and this guy comes across as a total partisan and candya$$ weenie. And people called him on it. Some may have been more professional than others. But the fact remains, this guy couldn’t punch through a wet napkin. All journalists should be embarrassed.
I would like for him to document his experience with a bazooka. I'm assuming, of course, he's referring to a weapon. However, in his world, a bazooka could be something entirely different.
THAT is good writing, sir. That should win an award. lol
“To reiterate, the goal of the story was simply to share with readers my experience of firing an AR-15, which very few of them have done”
Couple of points.
1.How do you know that few of your readers every fired an AR or a similar weapon? Isn’t that a rather large assumption?
2.Now this is an opinion on my part but its based on the fact that you doubled down on this issue. I think your goal was an anti-gun piece. I don’t think no matter what the experience would you have written anything positive about weapons.
3. This is just advice. When 10 year old girls have the ability to make fun of your manhood, you may want to re-evaluate you life.
The message is this: Americans are expressing their 1st Amendment rights, and, since it offends me, they should have no 2nd Amendment rights.
Fast forward to the day when Pajama Boys run the country; surrounded, of course, by their heavily armed pet bodyguards.
Wish I could take credit for that...
I would like to watch this guy fire a a shortbarrelled 10 gauge shot gun with some magnum shells loaded. lol
I’m going to have to chew on that for a while.
He writes this just days after opponents of gay marriage were told that they can’t express sympathy for the Orlando shooting victims and their families.
That video is a mockery of our AMERICAN gun culture and our rights. Some foreigner immigrant adding his conditions of personal approval to a sale because of his politics.
He has right as the FFL seller, but it sure doesn’t mean I’d buy a weapon from that assh@ole.
