Dozens of commuters ran out of a crowded Manhattan subway station Tuesday morning after one straphanger thought someone claimed to have a gun, according to the NYPD.
Straphangers stampeded out of the Central Park North - 110th Street subway station in Harlem at about 9 a.m. in what police are calling mass hysteria.
Authorities said the commotion spurred from a fight between two people on a 2 train. It's not clear what led straphangers to believe someone had a gun. But police said that it doesn't appear that a gun was ever fired.

What is really frightening, motivated bad guys can start a rumor or use a prop in a large crowd to funnel hundreds hysterical folks into a kill zone. It’s been done before.

I had a colleague who graduated from Bishop DuBois High School in upper Manhattan in the 1950’s. He was on the rifle team, and they would carry their rifles at sling arms on the subway, same general area as this, for practice and competition at Knightsbridge Armory in the Bronx.
Image if a bunch of high school kids got on the subway with rifles today. CNN would blow a circuit breaker. MSNBC would melt into an hysterical puddle. Oh weeping and gnashing of teeth. Oh the huge manatee.
Confusing story. A fight is on the actual train and yet the people on the platform panicked? I must say if I was in a car where somebody whipped out a gun during a fight, I might take flight - if possible. Hope no one was seriously hurt.

The jihadis have won. They have inspired terror. They have made airport checkin a nightmare. They have increased the mutual mistrust Americans have for each other.
If they wanted to, they could bring an entire city to a halt by placing a DRAWING of a gun in 100 places throughout the city. Withing minutes, the media would be all over it and the city would be unable to function for the rest of the day, until the police determined that the drawings were just drawings.
A few empty briefcases left around too would heighten the panic.
