What Will Gun Controllers Do When Americans Ignore an ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban?
reason.com ^ | June 21, 2016 | J.D. Tuccille

But in the wake of Omar Mateen's bloody rampage in Orlando, gun control advocates think that overcoming the passionate opposition of firearms owners and imposing a ban on a difficult to define class of "assault weapons" is a swell idea whose time has come. This prohibition will somehow be different.

So, a United States the morning after, or a year after, or a decade after a successful effort to ban "assault weapons" will not be the scene of the "domestic disarmament" favored by prominent communitarian sociology professor Amitai Etzioni. It will be more like Prohibition-era America, but with hidden rifles substituting for stockpiled hooch and 3D printers standing in for moonshiners' stills. And probably a bit more tense.

No. Not 3D printers making limited weapons. Underground machining. Turning those semis into FAs.

I assume any such ban would include a restriction on ammunition sales.

‘Assault weapons’, i.e. fully automatics, have been illegal to privately own, except for certain very specific circumstances, like verified and licensed collectors, since 1934.................................

What someone like Piers Morgan will not bother telling you also is that following the 1997 pistol ban in the U.K. (in the wake of Thomas Hamilton’s bloody rampage in Dunblane), people simply made handguns in tire shops and elsewhere and bought them from the Eastern Europe illegal gun trade(certainly did not need expensive Olympic target shooting pistols or rare collection pieces).

Yes ... a complete violation of the Second Amendment.

What did they do in Connecticut when ordered to turn them in - or become felons and have the gendarmes knocking down the doors ???

No one complied. Deadlines came and went. (They realized, along the line, that 30% of those gun-owners were law enforcement officers who had them in their private collections.)

the collection scenario didn’t look promising - so it died a silent death.

The ‘gun controllers’ will send the police to shoot you and confiscate your property under the guse of asset forfeiture. This has been well rehersed already with other things the govt has banned/outlawed. I suspect tho the police will step things up consdierably since any ‘raid’ will be consider high risk.

It’s a political term, and the Dems know it. They use it because it sounds scary.

If you think about it, ALL WEAPONS ARE ‘ASSAULT WEAPONS’. That’s why they are called ‘weapons’...........................

The ability to do so had no influence in my decision this ex machinist made to buy a mill and lathe. Nothing at all.

Not that a Ammo ban would matter either. Between the 20 + trillion rounds already in the hands of citizens, and reloaders. . . .and of course, there will IMMEDIATELY be a black market in ammo. .

“Underground machining. Turning those semis into FAs.”

FA isn’t worth it unless you get into the crew served world. Especially in a reality where ammo and weapons are highly restricted.

They have to go home at night. They have families.

The problem with a government declaring war on its people is that those people no longer have any obligation to obey ANY law.

If the penalty for having a semi is the same as a FA.

Why not?

Any reasonably good machinist, working with templates and design specs, could construct a fairly good facsimile of a simple pistol, capable of firing a projectile lethal at fairly short range, and with practice, gain enough skills to build some pretty precision and accurate sidearms.

But even crude weapons may be fashioned from common materials and with only a fair degree of being handy with metalworking and joining of parts. May not have a very long lifetime, but these “Saturday Night specials” could find their way into hands of “self-defense”.

The genie is kind of out of the bottle on containing small arms altogether.

The next step in 3d printing needs to be to make the rest of the gun parts instead of just 80% lowers, and also to making parts for things besides rifles and pistols. Imagine a 3D printer that could run off, say, the pieces for a put-together bazooka (fill the warhead with your choice of Fun Stuff) and a few claymore shells to go with your rifle.

That police force better be from out of town because otherwise the locals know exactly where the cops live.

Eventually, that police force will start to dwindle in number and die off after each unsuccessful raid.

Cops and politicians know it would be suicidal to try to disarm all of America.
