Two planes are en route to conduct a medical rescue operation for one of the 48 workers at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

Both planes will fly into Rothera Research Station, on Adelaide Island, but only one will continue for 1,500 more miles to the Amundsen-Scott station to evacuate the worker, a man employed by contractor Lockheed Martin. A second person may also be evacuated, according to Kelly Falkner, the director of polar programs for the National Science Foundation.

If the primary rescue plane crashes, the second aircraft will assist in search-and-rescue efforts.

And at the height of winter in the southern hemisphere, too. Prayers up.

Close to the literally shortest/darkest day (no sunrise at all - or one sunrise/sunset cycle per year), but I don’t think it’s the harshest weather, not yet.

Tomorrow’s the solstice, so you are correct, right in the middle of winter down there. Few things worse than being at the end of a logistics chain and being totally dependent. Hope it goes well.

Years ago I met a marine biologist in New Zealand who had just “wintered over” in Antarctica. The stories she told were fascinating...including stories of temps going down to almost -100F.

It’s like another planet. I’ve talked via radio to folks at Vostok, the Russian research station which is about 800 miles SE of Amundsen-Scott station.

Pancreatitis. 50% chance of expiring during the winter.

I've had that.

Without morphine, I surely would have died before surgery.

I used to talk online with a guy who spent several winter seasons working IT at the large scientific base in Antarctica.

He said it was a long winter if you didn’t have a squeeze while there.

This was early 80's...can't recall the name...but I *do* recall she was female (and rather cute).

Isn’t everything pretty much North of Amundsen-Scott?

Your showing your directional bias.
