Legendary Baseball Announcer Blasts Socialism During Game Broadcast (Vin Scully)

“Socialism failing to work as it always does, this time in Venezuela,” Scully said. “You talk about giving everybody something free and all of a sudden there’s no food to eat. And who do you think is the richest person in Venezuela? The daughter of Hugo Chavez. Hello. Anyway. Oh and two.”

Good thing he doesn’t work for ESPN.

I don't know Vin Scully personally, but my intuitive guess is that he's been on the conservative side of things all these years, working in an an environment - baseball (as well as media) - which has morphed steadily toward the left over his long time on the job with the Dodgers, especially in the past two or three decades.

He had probably been restraining himself from getting into serious discussions over things he had seen around him that were gnawing at him for awhile, in the interest of preserving his unparalleled reputation in the sportscasting world. But now, knowing that he is in his final year on the job, he temporarily lost that restraint and let off some "politically incorrect" steam. He's at the stage where he really has nothing to lose and he knows it.

Congratulations, Vin, for using your iconic status to irritate the lefty sports media and the MSM as a whole. They richly deserve it.

That'a a photo of Scully (post # 66) as a young broadcaster at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, with the bottle of Schaefer Beer and the carton of Lucky Strike cigarettes at the ready for TV advertisements. Yes, they used to have the play-by-play announcers doing live commercials from the TV booth between innings in those days, and many of the teams' TV sponsors were beer and tobacco companies. No interference from government -- yet!

That same photo was published in Sports Illustrated about a month ago with an interesting cover story on Scully and his career.

My recollection is that beer and cigarettes were the ONLY sponsors when NYC had three baseball teams.

Giants: Chesterfield and Knickerebocker

Dodgers: Lucky Strike and Schaefer

Yankees: Camels and Ballentine

As for announcers doing commercials, they do it here in spades now. "This payoff pitch is brought to you by Wendy's," or "This call to the bullpen is sponsored by you local Good Olds Guys." It really is annoying.

Agreed. One of the many reasons why baseball on the radio now is no where as popular now as it was in the fifties and sixties.

Walk around the streets of a major city when a game is in progress now and you'll very seldom hear the call of a game blaring from a store, a private home, or a car. Quite a contrast from years gone by.
