After reading that Academy Sports was pulling their AR style rifles off the shelves, I headed to my neighborhood Gander Mountain here in Jacksonville, Florida to see if they had wussed out as well.
If Gander Mountain is pulling their AR rifles off the shelves, it is only because they are putting them in boxes and sending them out the door with customers.
I approached the hunting department around 7:00 pm. I hadn't planned on buying anything, though I hadn't dismissed the idea either. I was just there to look around.
AR-styles have always interested me. I am familiar with the weapon from the military. I earned my rifle qualification on an M4. Although an "AK Guy", I've found the AR to be easy to handle and fun to shoot.
Anyhow, I wasn't the only person occupying the three sales clerks' time at Gander Mountain. They were quite busy. There were a lot of men, some women, young, old, white, black all amongst the crowd at the Gander Mountain firearms department last night.
A half dozen of us were gathered specifically around the rapidly diminishing AR section of the firearm shelves. The salesman, who had grown well-rehearsed at what he was about to say grouped us together so he could deliver his sales speech at the same time.
He then proceeded to sell us on the virtues of the Armalite Eagle-15, an AR flattop with MilSpec construction and a .223 Wylde barrel.
They were selling them for $599. They currently had four left, even after doubling their orders following recent events. A quick internet search showed this price to be a bit high. The catch was, Gander had them here and right now while the lower-priced dealers were out of stock.
Normally, I'd think about it, go home, do a whole bunch of research on "what's the best base-model AR" and then return to the store to buy something three times higher than I had planned on spending.
But this time was different. Something stinks in the air right now. I'm feeling it. I think we all are.
It is the time to buy, not think about buying. I was the first man in the group to raise my hand and say, "start the paperwork." Within an hour, all four Armalites were gone as well as some S&W's, Sigs and other variants.
The rifle came with one 30rd magazine, no sling, no rear sight. Some overpriced ammo and accessories set me back about a grand total.
Not a bad Father's Day weekend at the gun store at all.
It’s a pistol with a long barrel and longer cartridge and shoulder stock...and it’s louder...that’s about it. Locally here in Hebron, KY,i bought Anderson Rifles’ version...just under $800.
I’ve been debating such a purchase for a long time. Currently I’m only chambered in .22 (sidearm and rifle) and .45 (sidearm) with 12 & 410 gauge shotguns.
I’m looking to pick up a S&W Governor to leverage the .45 and 410 and have also considered looking for a .45 rifle.
I’d prefer to get a longer range rifle such as a 30-06 or 30/30 as I’m gapped there currently, but would like to have the mag capacity of an AR/AK.
I enjoy longer range shooting as a challenge, but have never done anything formal in regards to loading or getting into some of the calculations.
Maybe I just need to make the call and increase my caliber range...
The Gun Digest Book of the AR 15, by Patrick Sweeney is one of the best manuals I’ve seen for anyone wanting to know how to familiarize himself with the firearm. It shows you how it works, how to clean and maintain the AR.
Your getting brass cased ammo for .30 rd?

Now go shoot it. And shoot it some more.
You’re going to need sights or optics.
Primary Arms micro dot if you want a red dot sight. If you find it’s for you then you can pay up for an Aimpoint later if you feel the need.
Now buy lots of Magpul magazines to feed it! Either the 20rnd or 30rnd ones are great, and so far my experience with a 40 rounder has been excellent.
You’ll be very pleased with that Rock River. I know I am with mine.

If you feel something bad is in the air, it’s not. Gun control will STILL have no traction, ESPECIALLY because it was a Muslim attack. In a sane world there would be government giveout guns.
I’m really partial to the 20 rd. mags. 30 rounders are too long and seem to get in the way.

So, how you going to afford the ammo to feed it?
20s are nice. The only reason to have 30s or 40s is because it hacks off the gungrabbers.
5s and 10s are best at the range, IMHO.

If you can change a tire, you can build an AR.
Initial startup might cost a bit more because of the tools required, but you only have to buy those once.
I built mine entirely at my computer desk.
I also just read that you’re originally from Colorado.
I’m in Denver, and the magazine restrictions simply mean that I get to take my family on road trips to Wyoming from time to time.
At least until we can get rid of those idiots who voted for that stupid law.
I’m not so keen on a straight up AR-15. I have a couple, but their use is limited. Unless you get an ARAK-21 or similar gas driven upper, you can’t make it into a short gun. And, at close range, I see a toss up between a big stopper like a 1911 or a totally hidable cc like a Ruger LCR.
And, if you are gonna pick someone off at a distance, then an AR-15 or equivalent barrelled for a 300 blackout is the tool for the job. Subsonic loaded, suppressed and scoped.
