Well, you can't procreate with a robot, and that's what it's coming down to.

And historically, no known society has been able to pull out of such a severe dowanward fertility spiral. None.

In a couple of generations, in a "One-Child-Glorious" society, each and every child has 2 parents, 4 grandparents, and 8 great-grandparents all to him or herself. And no brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, or cousins.

Do you think any such child, with eight great-grandparents to care for (either directly, or through taxes) is going to decide in their 20's or 30's to get married and have kids?

No, Japan will not "stabilize." Nations which will not reproduce, are replaced by those who do.

Wouldn’t they just answer that surplus people are those who eat only because others are taxed? It seems to provide an objective and unambiguous, if harsh, criterion for answering.

Japan is an island. They can keep out “invaders”. I wont be surprised to see them going nuclear in a decade or two to protect their territorial integrity.

What about a rather large, rather nearby nation --- like China --- which might be willing to lose a couple million people, for the chance to pick up some very valuable real estate?

Lordy, it could be Indonesian/Malaysian Muslims, gone fanatical and willing to die.

Nah. They are actually moderate. You don't see many ISIS/Al-Qaeda terrorists from Indonesia/Malaysia. It's because they do not adhere to Wahhabi sect of Islam.

In no way does my argument contradict yours.

Every once in a while I’ve noticed the “reply” function misfires and puts in a Freeper who is different than the one being addressed. I suspect that happened on your reply.

That’s a nice sentiment, but it only works if a woman is willing to live on the dole and risk the safety of their kids in order to bear them. That doesn’t meet the criteria of being a responsible person however, so while a nice sentiment it is also mistaken.

And all the while the U.S. birth rate is declining, illegal immigrants are pouring in from all over the world to the land of milk and honey...sorry, milk and money. What will happen when the money runs out?

Where there is a will....

I contend that the “affordability” of children is a lie from the pit of hell, as it is with marriage. I understand that practical considerations, planning, and prudence must all be considered, and that not every couple’s circumstances are identical.

The lie, however, is that all that we have must come from ourselves (not God), and that we must reach some elusive state of financial “security” before we allow our holy matrimonies to bear their natural fruit.

Mrs. Señor Presidente is now expecting our fifth child.
In our marriage, I can but testify to the veracity of Him who said, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.”

Sounds good to me. Would have preferred the 1600s myself. Not too many people use cell phones to talk anymore. The digital voice quality is so bad you can barely understand anyone. They are all texting, chatting, emailing or messaging now. Cell phones are not even held close to their heads or people use earphones to get better quality.

I have seen maybe 2-3 young babies in stores with both parents. Now when I see young kids who are older, but; still small enough to fit in the grocery cart top basket with their face looking towards the adult pushing it, I have almost always ended up talking to granny who is taking the kid with her that day. It seems that many men 35 and younger are living with their parents. A young man I spoke to who works at Lowes told me women his age will not date him as they want a dead beat to move in or just come around as they do not want any income reported for the household.
