It's been more than a half a century since the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education ruling found that "separate but equal" has no place in U.S. public schools.
And yet, true racial equality in our education system is yet to materialize.
That's clear from the startling revelations in the latest Education Department report released Tuesday. Entitled the Civil Rights Data Collection, the survey is conducted biennially. This one surveyed 50 million students in 95,000 schools during the 2013-2014 school year.
It shows how much African-American and Latino students still lag in terms of opportunities.
The disparity "tears at the moral fabric of our nation," Education Secretary John B. King Jr. told reporters. "What sets the U.S. apart from any other country is the idea that opportunity is universal," he said. "These data show that we still fall far short of that ideal."

The Department of Education report confuses differences in disciplinary issues and academic performance with differences in opportunity. The underlying bias, of course, is a commitment to equality of outcome regardless of the capabilities and behaviors of the students.
My guess is that two offenses -- hitting or kicking other students, and repeated theft -- account for most preschool suspensions. And my hunch is that hitting is the biggest factor. A small child with no impulse control, and perhaps from a violent home, can easily strike out at another student in a moment of frustration or anger. Just a guess.
As the number of white kids dwindle this racial whining will ring especially hollow; blacks will be whining about the superior accomplishments of Hispanic and Asian students with no white devil to blame...
Oh, those nasty Asian kids. They actually study rather than suck away at the government teat! Can you believe it?
I’m fortunate my children have some in their classes; they certainly raise the bar...
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink
You can force a kid to school but you can’t make him think
What has Obama done to address the problems of inner city schools? Send his kids to a private one.
Get the Urban Utes to apply equal EFFORT and you might get equal results.
The above illustrates just how horrible public schools in the USA have become.
Slight correction: LIBERTY or equality - you can’t have both.
This BS report is being used to deliberately mislead people who do not understand statistics. Blacks are not suspended more than whites for the same offenses. Blacks commit more violent offenses, often repeatedly than do other groups. Punching a teacher is punished differently than running in the halls. Cursing a teacher once is treated differently than cursing a teacher once a week. Another race hustling report from the race hustler in chief.
“diversityEquality - pick one, you can’t have both”
Slight correction: LIBERTY or equality - you can’t have both.
The report is prepared by the Obama administration in it’s waning days and is therefore totally suspect. It is most likely fodder to feed the coming Executive Order accomplishing some goal of the “Black Community” leaders
“...lag in terms of opportunities.”
Oh there’s abundant opportunity...to beat and rob fellow students and staff, and make “worldstar!” videos of themselves doing so.
“The report is prepared by the Obama administration in its waning days and is therefore totally suspect. It is most likely fodder to feed the coming Executive Order accomplishing some goal of the Black Community leaders”
They have put out a number of reports like this going back to the Eric Holder days. Part of the pipeline to prison BS. No controls for type of offense, racial makeup of the schools, repeated vs 1 time offenders, etc. Now they are adding things like teacher experience, advanced courses (for people who cant pass even the dumbed down versions), guidence counselors, presence of cops.... Black schools suck because the kids are out of control, dont care about learning, have no parental support, are afraid to discipline, and are full of corrupt and incompetent affirmative action administrators.
Public schools cant do that.
Well, they won’t do it at any rate. Some lying NY Dem used that same we can’t throw them out whinge to John Cardinal O’Connor and his eminence immediately replied: “Send them to me”. THAT conversation ended real quick.
The one parent family model is the problem, not so much the schools.
Yes. There will always be racial disparities -- at least until they kick white kids out of school after sixth grade.
The elephant in the room is shaped like a double helix!
There is a wonderful site called Stuff Black People Don’t Like dot com, and they have a saying (several, really) that goes something like this, relative to culture:
“You can have diversity, or you can have a functioning society, but you can’t have both.”
They also have this one, regarding economic realities:
“You can have a welfare state, and you can have a space program, but you can’t have both.”
