Turns Out Trump Has Always Liked Susana Martinez
Roll Call ^ | Stephanie Akin

Donald Trump has a new message for Susana Martinez, the Republican New Mexico governor he slammed in front of a home state crowd for not doing her job: Actually, he thinks she's pretty great.

Trump would now like Martinez's endorsement, he said Thursday in a phone interview with a New Mexico newspaper reporter, signaling a truce in a public spat with the country's only Latina governor and chairwoman of the Republican Governor's Association that had raised questions about Trump's desire to unify the party.

“I respect her. I have always liked her,” he told the Sante Fe New Mexican.

The reversal comes after Martinez made her own gesture of rapprochement. She said in a television interview that, in spite of her criticism of Trump's stance on Mexican immigrants, she remained open to endorsing him.

It also coincided with the taming of Trump's most powerful critics within the party. House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Thursday that he would no longer withhold his support for the Party's presumptive nominee. And a fervent effort to recruit a third party candidate who could rival Trump fizzled with the naming of relatively unknown lawyer David French.

Trump's attack on Martinez, at a rally in Albuquerque last week, attracted national attention.

Martinez has frequently appeared on short lists of potential running mates for Trump. She represents demographics — Hispanics and women — considered crucial to his ability to win the general election.

But instead of courting her, Trump swiped at her after she withheld her endorsement.

“”Join up with Trump and Trump welcomes you to the fold, and offers to help you change your ways for the better, if you follow him to victory””

There won’t be a victory if he doesn’t learn to hold his tongue. He may have gone too far with this. We all admire and respect someone who speaks the truth and doesn’t worry about being PC but this is different. He has no governor on his mouth! No pun intended.

Fair question.

Here’s how I see it. Trump is constantly wheeling and dealing. We don’t know everything that is going on behind the scenes. He has hinted that people who bad mouth him want to bury the hatchet. Look at the whole Lindsay Graham thing. It sounds like SM reached out behind the scenes and he decided to lay off of her. Or he wants more unity going into the convention. It’s not something to get concerned about.

“”She is incompetent, a drunk “”

Not another one - I always thought the governor of AZ was a drinker. I knew it would come to me - Brewer..

The Martinez kerfuffle was also a message to recalcitrant Republicans to either get with Trump or get chewed on.

The old carrot or the stick offer.

Are you kidding me??? It’s an attitude like that which is the reason the US is looked upon by the rest of the world as a bunch of pussies, thanks to our do-nothing “leaders”.

If you feel that offended, maybe you should support Gary Johnson. He appears to not be exciting or animated at all.

I don’t know why the media always has to exaggerate.

It's how they make money.

BS. Trump said the truth. People are only upset because she is (1) A Republican, (2) A woman, albeit ugly, and (2) Mexican. He is not pandering to any of those three, which is fantastic. He is saying, since you don’t support me, especially since you are incompetent, you are called on this. Good for Trump!

Yep, along with his “shot across the bow” press conference. Trump is constantly leveraging and advancing his position.

Nailed it, he’s the “Artisan” personality type. It befuddles many of us who are REALLY committed to our grudges, to see someone roll with the punches and remain open to yesterday’s enemies.

Trump is inspiring and persuading her to do what he wants. Read what Scott Adams says about Trump.

She’ll never be chosen as Veep - he is displaying a lot of savvy by letting her know that if she plays nice, he’ll act in kind. Puts her in the doggy house if she doesn’t “forgive and forget”.

She has RINO qualities, I agree.

But this is NM, which has been invaded by Californians and is about 80% owned by the feds, so she is the best we could hope for.

I personally don’t want to lose her and her get Palanized.

This is where Trump needs to stop being the businessman looking for the deal. There is no deals to be made with RINOs. Decide what’s right and wrong and stick with it. It’s all the flip-flop politicians who’ve created this mess.

As a Rubio supporter who's now come over to the Trump train, I need some remedial help....Do we agree with Trump that Martinez is doing a lousy job, but then agree she's always been great when Big Don changes his mind? Do we laugh off his insults and just say That's just Trump? A little help please?

That's called politics. Look to your boy Rubio who has endorsed Trump despite the remarks he made during the campaign about Trump. Business is business.

He’s going to blow this and he needs to be gagged!

Trump beat out 16 other tough, competent competitors, including governors and senators. He has amassed more primary votes than any GOP candidate in history and he will add to that total on June 7. He has more than 50% of the delegates and 41% of the popular vote.

The political pundits and the MSM have underestimated him from the very beginning. Let Donald be Donald. He's a winner. He should ignore the political consultants and do it his way. I want a fighter who will not take crap from anyone.

He’s like a 5 year old you have to send to his room or ground him because he hasn’t learned - after being warned - to behave himself...

Yeah, right. Rather condescending of you. You are entitled to your own opinion, but the facts say otherwise. Trump has excellent political instincts and judgment. He has set the issue agenda for this election and everyone else is just dealing with it including Hillary and Bernie.

Trump is the street fighter who will do anything to win. He will get down in the mud and the blood and the beer. It is the only way to deal with the Dem political machine that engages in the strategy of personal destruction, race-baiting, and identity politics.

The GOP has lost the popular vote in 5 out of the last 6 elections. It is a dying party that needs to stop being defensive and go on the attack. This is going to be one of the nastiest and ugliest campaigns in history and Trump is the only Rep that seems to understand how to fight it.
