Donald Trump has a new message for Susana Martinez, the Republican New Mexico governor he slammed in front of a home state crowd for not doing her job: Actually, he thinks she's pretty great.
Trump would now like Martinez's endorsement, he said Thursday in a phone interview with a New Mexico newspaper reporter, signaling a truce in a public spat with the country's only Latina governor and chairwoman of the Republican Governor's Association that had raised questions about Trump's desire to unify the party.
“I respect her. I have always liked her,” he told the Sante Fe New Mexican.
The reversal comes after Martinez made her own gesture of rapprochement. She said in a television interview that, in spite of her criticism of Trump's stance on Mexican immigrants, she remained open to endorsing him.
It also coincided with the taming of Trump's most powerful critics within the party. House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Thursday that he would no longer withhold his support for the Party's presumptive nominee. And a fervent effort to recruit a third party candidate who could rival Trump fizzled with the naming of relatively unknown lawyer David French.
Trump's attack on Martinez, at a rally in Albuquerque last week, attracted national attention.
Martinez has frequently appeared on short lists of potential running mates for Trump. She represents demographics — Hispanics and women — considered crucial to his ability to win the general election.
But instead of courting her, Trump swiped at her after she withheld her endorsement.

That’s kind of the elephant in the room. I’ve stated since
December that if Donald Trump were the nominee I’d vote for him in the general but he sure makes it hard sometimes. I’d like to see him win or come out on top when comparing policy and principle rather than just lobbing verbal Molotovs until one ignites. Just my opinion.
This is how Trump operate. Trump like people who say nice things about him and dislike people who say bad things about him. He’s a counter puncher. If someone get nasty with him, he throw it back. He rather not have to have enemies, he prefer friends. So if Susana is willing to make peace, he’s will make friend with her.

Trump is not ideological. He will roll with the flow. He knows most people have short term memory, so he lives in the moment. A Master of sound bytes.
You hit Trump, he looks into your record and biography, and figures out where you've screwed up, and he hits you back with that. Bad job as governor (Walker, Martinez), bad votes, bad personal traits, whatever.

That’s true...but now? I don’t know why she thinks he needs to address what he would do for NM.....It’s up to her to straighten out NM’s problems; not the job of the president of the United States.
He’s not going to get by with this for much longer. He better slow down and pay attention to what he’s saying or we’re going to end up with Hillary.....
Martinez has been a good governor for us. She has to fight a dem dominated legislature. Trump must have been talking about someone else...
Trump treats them like a sinner who has seen the light.
He does not think much of her political views, and made THAT clear.
However, he can be civil.

I don’t think she’s made any overture to him about making peace... He’s like a 5 year old you have to send to his room or ground him because he hasn’t learned - after being warned - to behave himself...

She is incompetent, a drunk that tried to use her personal position to intimidate fellow citizens complaining about her partying. Trump is now only playing her.
I don’t know why the media always has to exaggerate. I heard him say she as governor needs to do a better job. Her approval ratings have slipped below 50% so obviously she needs to be doing a better job.
It's merely a way for her to save face.
Trump is a businessman, a dealer, a negotiator, a deal maker, a special op operator... ya say things that make all these things happen. He uses words he has used to make his fortune... know when to hold em and know when to fold em.. and I think he does. He’s not going to forsake us... he’s doing what he does. Don’t panic... he isn’t... and he’s in the firing line.
