Iran's FM against Trump: Nuclear deal can't be renegotiated
Arutz Sheva ^ | 2/6/16 | Ben Ariel

Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said on Wednesday that the nuclear deal reached last year with world powers can't be renegotiated, despite Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's pledge to do so if elected.

Speaking after a lecture in Stockholm and quoted by The Associated Press (AP), Zarif said the deal "is not an Iran-U.S. agreement for the Republican front-runner or anybody else to renegotiate. It's an international understanding annexed to a Security Council resolution."

Trump has denounced the deal and said he would seek to renegotiate it if elected president. One of those times came during his speech at the AIPAC policy conference, where he declared that his number one number priority is to roll back the “disastrous” deal with Iran.

“This deal is catastrophic, for America, for Israel and for the whole Middle East,” he said at the time.

Trump’s son Eric said this week his father decided to launch his campaign due to the controversial deal.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has said she supports the agreement to rein in Iran's nuclear program, which was endorsed by the UN Security Council, noted AP.

It's not possible "to renegotiate a text that is annexed" to such a resolution, Zarif said on Wednesday.

We withdraw from the deal, hit you hard with real sanctions...

Well one problem with that is that most of the sanctions that hurt Iran were from the EU and not from the US. Now that Obama has released the $150 Billion that we did have, the EU is falling all over themselves to get their piece of the pie before it dries up. I'm afraid that the Iranians, and the EU would just laugh at us if we mentioned sanctions again.

"Iran's FM against Trump: Nuclear deal can't be renegotiated"

Iran didn't make a deal with America. The deal was with obama. If the deal is void and they feel betrayed they should go after him.

But, Ted Cruz and all but one GOPe (Tom Cotton) approved the Corker Amendment so that Iran could have this deal.

So the deal MUST be good, right? I mean, good people wouldn't have voted in the affirmative for something bad, right?

True. That is part of the reason Ted and I divorced. I later took up with Donald.

"Iran didn't make a deal with America"

Correct. The deal was between P5 plus 1 and Iran. Subsequently, the entire world endorsed the deal with a vote in the UN General Assembly.

If Trump wants to re-apply the sanctions, he will need the P5 plus 1 and the rest of the world to co-operate.

The dirty secret is that this is a “hand shake agreement”. There is nothing in writing. There is nothing signed. There is nothing ratified by the US Senate. It is an “agreement” in name only. Otherwise known as smoke and mirrors.

Nope. Trump, more specifically the US, can unilaterally apply sanctions.

He doesn’t see that the root of the word “renegotiate” is “reneg”.

I usually believe that when you give your word, you stand by it.

Obama’s word is not the word of the US.

"unilaterally apply sanctions"

That could be done and would have some degree of effectiveness. But I seriously doubt that Trump can convince China and the rest of the world to stop buying Iran oil. And I don't think US consumers want to go back to $100 oil.

I seriously doubt that Trump could convince the rest of the world to suspend their investments in Iran.

No sanctions regime is total.

Simply put the US government can and does deny access to the SWIFT payments system, deny access to the US banking system at home and overseas, and more importantly it can deny access to both systems to any bank that does business with Iran. Effectively that cuts off Iran's access to US dollars in large amounts.

There are ways around this, but it makes things a lot more difficult. If you want to use kinetic means, Iran is easily blockaded. Nothing goes in and nothing in large amounts comes out.

I agree. Don’t renegotiate; since the Senate abrogated its constitutional responsibility, it’s not a treaty anyway.

Could be, but it would also support those who already want to replace the US dollar as the reserve currency with a basket of currencies.

Trump doesn't seem to have a lot of diplomatic skill and prefers to insult and spit in their face, which is why you like him.

BTW, a blockade is an act of war. It would not just cut off the flow of Iranian oil, but all oil that is shipped from the Persian Gulf. Now you are talking $250 oil.

You need to face reality. Trump is just blowing smoke up your rear-end-ski.

"Could be, but it would also support those who already want to replace the US dollar as the reserve currency with a basket of currencies."

Perhaps but the policy makers in Washington do not believe that is possible and they will act accordingly.

"Trump doesn't seem to have a lot of diplomatic skill..."

Well, you don't know that, do you? I see a man who has made deals with all kinds of people all over the world. He has participated in far more negotiations than all the dems combined.

"...and prefers to insult and spit in their face..."

Who is they? The dems? The press? His opponents? Other world leaders?

"...which is why you like him."

You can read minds over the internet??? You should go into business.

"BTW, a blockade is an act of war."

OMG, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

"It would not just cut off the flow of Iranian oil, but all oil that is shipped from the Persian Gulf."

Not necessarily.

"Now you are talking $250 oil."

Not necessarily. Even in their weakened state I think you underestimate the abilities of the USAF, the USN, and the Gulf States. The latter would love to blockade Iranian oil while still selling their own.

The Iranian navy and air force are highly vulnerable. Sweep them away and there is not much left to harass tankers in the gulf and nothing left to protect Iranian shipping.

"You need to face reality."

I will get right on that.

"Trump is just blowing smoke up your rear-end-ski."

Time will tell.

The US needs to get out of the UN and close their offices in our country. This globalist wet dream of the Left has cost us dearly. Woodrow Wilson was the Father of Socialism in this country and should be viewed as an enemy to our sovereignty. Instead of renaming schools in the South that bear Robert E Lee’s name, schools throughout the country that memorialize Woodrow Wilson ought to be renamed.

I suspect any Trump sanctions start with oil. Seizing offshore assets would squelch any tittering right away.
