There's no putting a chill on the worldwide air conditioning boom that's expected to heat up to historic levels over the next decade.
Nations with emerging economies and spiking populations - including India, Indonesia and Brazil - are seeing air conditioner sales grow 10 to 15 percent a year. That means the world's supply of A/C units could nearly double from about 900,000 million in 2015 to roughly 1.6 million by 2030, according to a recent Berkeley National Laboratory study.
So instead of simply trying to shut off the inexorable growth, scientists are working to find fresh energy-efficient technologies that could offset the effects A/C units have on the climate.
Reducing the amount of HFCs in the environment would be a better alternative to mitigating climate change than trying to control CO2 use alone, the researchers say.
Scientists worry energy use and emissions will only worsen once countries such as India - known for its extreme heat, but which is still playing catch-up in terms of A/C use - bring millions of units on the grid in order to combat rising temperatures.

This is a nice little read - be sure to pass it on!
The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in
some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a
report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulate, at Bergen,
Norway
Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change
in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone.
Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north
as 81 degrees 29 minutes.
Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm.
Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and
stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers
have entirely disappeared.
Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic,
while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before
ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing
grounds.
Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea
will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as
reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post - 94 years
ago.
It’s supposed to be 105 here today. Let them try to take it.
I would love to have solar to run our ac. Supposed to be 105 here today. When they make it financially viable, it still isn’t especially at our age, maybe I’ll get it. Til then I’ll have to pay PG&E.
I’m a fan man, but it’s sweltering here too; in a minute I’m going to put on a wrung-out wet shirt.
“Reducing the amount of HFCs in the environment would be a better alternative to mitigating climate change than trying to control CO2 use alone, the researchers say. “
And how does one “use” CO2 exactly?
Well, ObaMao flew over to Africa in his (our) 747 and told them they don’t need cars or airconditioners.
I’m sick of these as$holes.
I guess in a drier desert climate like India one could use evaporative “swamp” coolers where suitable.
No mechanical refrigeration cycle in those.
Of course they will put water vapor into the air. LOL
What happens when the sun goes down? Will there be enough juice to power the compressor? Notice these retards who say stupid crap like this never address these issues?
Cool. Thanks for the anecdote. A/Cs less than 100 years old whereas heating goes back eons. It’s only logical A/C will cause demographic relocation and only rational that people will move to places with new, growing economies which don’t have the bureaucratic overburden of long-established developed regions. It’ll be good while it lasts but eventually the criminals and parasites will gain control and economic growth will falter there as well. Example: Pinellas, county FL. When there’s no place else to go there will be revolutions and war -and it will all be climate controlled.
Maybe we Westerers/Southerners weren’t so wrong for using Roof - Top Swamp Coolers after-all.
The advent of Cooling (A/C) is largely responsible for population growth in the south.
I’m sure living in manmade houses does too.
What date was this published? What page number? I want to get this.
Couldn’t live here w/o a/c. It sucks to rely on artificial climate control. But it’s nice after summer.
True.
Just like the control of fire, by humans in Africa allowed migration to northern climates.
50,000 years ago.
Daughter has solar that’s hooked into the grid. It works fine for them. I was speaking strictly financial. The systems cost more than the electric bill. 15 years is a long time to be tied into a system that may become irrelevant in a year. Technology. And if you sell your house you have to sell the system too. I don’t want a lien on our home by anyone.
It just doesn’t make sense yet financially to me.
I’m sure everyone would come up with a different list of the most important inventions of the last 100-150 years to improve our quality of life but for me, air conditioning is towards the top of the list.
For the liberal/progressive set, that's not a bug, that's a feature.
