Byron York: Why Trump attacked Martinez
washingtonexaminer.com ^ | Byron York

Posted on 05/31/2016 7:21:25 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

Many observers were mystified when Donald Trump attacked New Mexico Republican Gov. Susana Martinez. But the story was really very simple: Martinez hit Trump, so Trump hit back.

*snip*

The Trump-Martinez bewilderment focused on four factors: Martinez is Hispanic, she's a woman, she's a Republican (head of the Republican Governors Association), and she's popular. "I think it sent all the wrong signals," said Newt Gingrich, who has generally been pro-Trump. "You particularly don't want to see your candidate who needs to...get stronger with Latinos, and stronger with women, attack a Latina woman Republican governor."

*snip*

Trump has made a principle of hitting back harder than he is hit. And he has been so effective that many Republicans, elected and not, have decided the smart thing is to refrain from taking on Trump, even if they oppose him.

Not Martinez. In mid-April, the New Mexico governor issued a "remarkably strong rebuke" to Trump, in the words of a Washington Post report, when Martinez spoke to a GOP fundraiser at the home of David Koch in Palm Beach, Florida. Martinez, according to the Post, "did not mince words. She told the crowd of about 60 wealthy GOP backers that, as a Latina, she was offended by Trump's language about immigrants. Noting her years working as a prosecutor on the Mexican border and now as a border-state governor, Martinez said Trump's plan to build a wall and force Mexico to pay for it was unrealistic and irresponsible, according to multiple people in attendance."

Team Trump believes Martinez has continued to criticize him in private since those remarks. And when Trump traveled to Albuquerque, after having clinched the Republican nomination, Martinez told reporters she was "really busy" and did not have time to attend.

“Trump is an equal opportunity offender, no matter who you are, if you are political correctness protected class, such as women, minority or gay, that won’t protect you from counterpunching. I like it.”

Free speech is back. The counter-revolution is on.

Exactly. She is another loser funded by the Koch Brothers. This so called Republican got only a little of what she deserved as those on food stamps and other GOV handouts has tripled since she was elected. That probably tops every liberal/progressive Gov in America. The woman needs to be canned by the voters. That idiot Johnson is from that state too. I am glad I never drove on any road or set foot in that state. Frankly it looks like hell from the air.

He responded to her just as he has responded to all other detractors.

IOW, a defining feature of a Trump presidency will be to savage anyone who disagrees with him.

With FDR, there were "fireside chats". With Trump, there will be "Twitter Wars."

Should be entertaining...lol.

Illegal aliens stampeding across our border are not “immigrants.”

If Susana Martinez can’t see that, and the damage caused by illegals in New Mexico and other states, then this idiot deserves to be attacked by Trump.

The GOP and conservatives' biggest problems have long been their hands-off approach to sacred cows. In fact, we ran two of them in the most recent presidential elections.

Martinez thought she was bullet-proof (i.e., Hispanic, woman, Republican, popular), so she took a swipe at Trump on behalf of the GOP-e.

To her chagrin, she learned that Trump doesn’t play by the GOP-e approved rules.

Go Trump.

“Trump has made a principle of hitting back harder than he is hit.”

And this is the humility we want in the leader of the free world? In response to an attack on the nation, of course. In response to a personal attack - childish and petulant.

We Are So Screwed (not sure which FReeper to credit).

In response to a personal attack

Ahhh... but it wasn't a personal attack. It was a public attack during a political campaign.

Not mentioned in the article is Trump’s rebuttal.

He said “She’s not doing her job”. Which is true.

I don’t really see how one can call that a “childish and petulant” response.
