Federal jury finds Googles use of Java software was fair use
A federal jury found Googles use of Oracle Corp.s Java software in its mobile products didnt violate copyright law, a verdict cheered by many in Silicon Valley who believe it will protect how they write and use software.
Thursdays decision, which Oracle said it would appeal, marked the latest chapter in a six-year legal battle in which Oracle sought as much as $9 billion from Google for using 11,000 lines of Java software code in its Android software.
Oracle sued Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., in 2010 for using parts of Java without permission. A federal appeals court later ruled that Oracle could copyright the Java parts, but Google argued in a new trial this month that its use of Java was limited and covered by rules permitting fair use of copyrighted material.
The verdict represents a win for the Android ecosystem, for the Java programming community, and for software developers who rely on open and free programming languages, Google said in statement.
Oracle General Counsel Dorian Daley said in statement, Google developed Android by illegally copying core Java technology to rush into the mobile device market. Ms. Daley added: there are numerous grounds for appeal.

So anyone who writes a program in Java is potentially violating copyright (according to Oracle)?
11k lines sounds like a lot, but could it be just linking one dll, for instance?
I don’t kknow who I hate most, Oaracle or Google. At least I am now on Mariadb after Oracle ate Mysql.
Almost as bad as choosing between obamsky and Tojo...
Or it may even be referring to lines of byte code, in which case 11000 lines isn't very much at all.
This is not just about Oracle vs. Google. This is anyone who wants to use Java and beyond.
So, the Clinton supporter, Oracle, lost to the Obama backing Google.
This sounds like the Java virtual machine. Not like code drafted in Java.
I don’t understand how the 11k line figure was arrived at, though.
So I'm reading your post and the wife asks me about that $30 per month on the one credit card. "You should cancel that." She says.
And I explain your post and several other examples of why I give to JimRob & FR.
Thank you!
It’s a shame they both couldn’t lose isn’t it?
Something interesting is that Google’s flagship browser, Chrome, is no longer compatible with Java.
FWIW, Java is a huge PITA in managed networks where security is important. I hate dealing with it, and with help-desk issues caused by Java apps.

Zimbra has also migrated to MariaDB since Oracle “ate” MySQL.
