Seattle's Vanishing Black Community
Pacific Northwest Magazine / Seattle Times ^ | May 26, 2016 | Tyrone Beason

Posted on 05/27/2016 9:17:44 PM PDT by steve86

PASTOR PATRINELL WRIGHT was just a 20-year-old country girl from Carthage, Texas, who didn’t know what she was getting into when she migrated to Seattle in 1964.

She grew up one of seven children in the Walnut Grove community, to be exact, a nearby farming enclave designated for blacks. That’s how it was in Southern towns back then. If you were black, you knew where you belonged, and it sure wasn’t around white people, unless you happened to be working for them.

Seattle had its own form of segregation, with blacks clustered mainly in the city’s Central District because of racist lending practices and whites-only “covenants” in housing subdivisions in Shoreline, Ballard, Green Lake, Queen Anne, Magnolia, White Center, Bellevue and beyond.

Wright boarded a Continental Trailways coach and set off by herself on the first cross-country bus ride she’d ever taken. But the price of that three-and-a-half-day bus ride to Seattle cost a lot more than what she paid for her ticket.

She was forced to take a seat at the back of the bus, on a bench barely suitable for sitting, the only black passenger on a coach overloaded with hate.

“I was called every name in the book, except ‘Child of God,’” Wright says while reminiscing at her home in the Central District, where she has lived for 48 years.

The bus lavatory and the restrooms at bus stations along the way were for whites only, too. Blacks used unisex outhouses behind the stations.

If I were her, I’d sell and take the windfall. I’d take the profit and move to a much less expensive town perhaps in the Carolinas. Or even just outside the CD, where the covenants are no longer valid.

Whites move into a black neighborhood, crime goes down, property values go up. Schools improve. The horror of being black in America.

If I can find the article I would post it. A few years ago I read a discussion of the effects of migration on several countries over the last several centuries. There was a brief discussion of the effects of imported slaves during the late 1600 - early 1700 into the USA. The bottom line was that when the slave traders were scouring the African west coast for blacks, it was not the smartest or the quickest blacks that were caught. The inference was that the bottom half of the gene pool was the initial seed for the black population in the USA.

Kind of a brutal assessment but IMO not without it’s merits.

“Why is it that blacks still lag far behind Asians, people from India, and pretty much everyone else?”

Like the American Indians, they are on a reservation. They are kept there because their votes are needed. They are there for the free goodies.

I have black friends from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast who came here, graduated college, became professionals and some became land lords.

The fact that they had enough ambition to uproot and come here in the first place explains largely why they are successful. Their story is the story of all immigrants who came to America starting in the 1500's with very little but a belief in themselves.

Let’s see, mostly black area = racism. Whites move in and percentage of blacks starts to reach national average = racism. What doesn’t = racism? Nothing.

“Why is it that blacks still lag far behind Asians, people from India, and pretty much everyone else?”

There are perfectly scientific, provable reasons for this. Added to the deplorable and unabashed using of them by Democrats during and after the Civil War, they haven’t had much of a chance to improve their own lot. In fact, they’ve been actually convinced as a race that their plight is the fault of everyone except themselves. If they had actually used any of the freedoms that they’ve been given(they didn’t even earn those)and become Americans like most immigrants who come to this nation, their situation would be that of all of us as free Americans. As it is, their insistence on using their energy to obtain the wealth of others instead of bending it toward working for their own is wreaking havoc on us all.

If blacks really wanted to be Americans, they wouldn’t make such efforts to set themselves apart as victims. African-Americans don’t have any desire to become Americans. They’re simply Africans in America because being that is what gets them a free ride. Asian people who come here use our system to their advantage by working. African Americans use our system to their advantage by playing the victim. LGBT, foreign interests, illegal aliens and all manner of “victims” have jumped on that bandwagon to further their robbing and pillaging of America. It won’t stop until the American worker and taxpayer says “enough”.

Are we supposed to feel guilty for what other people did in 1964?

So true. It certainly doesn’t apply to all blacks but they would be so much further along if they had taken advantage of the opportunities placed before them. Instead we get victimhood, haters, and race baiters.

I remember riding a bus from NY to VA in 1964. It made a stop in Williamsburg, VA. The women’s room sign had a barely painted over “white” to the left of “women” as a result of the Civil Rights Act adopted that year. So how is it that en route to WA they still had segregated restrooms when Virginia - capital of the Confederacy - had, at least barely, conformed to the new law?

““Why is it that blacks still lag far behind Asians, people from India, and pretty much everyone else?”

Could it be “The Bell Curve”?”

No, it is called social and cultural evolution. We spend several thousand years slowly progressing into a modern advanced society by learning the lessons on how to adapt, and build a modern society. that is how long it took to go from an aboriginal society to what we have now(on your own). They only have a few hundred years. But,since they were taken into a modern society (regardless of the circumstances) they have had the ability to emulate and adopt and many of them have they have caught up completely. Others have not both circumstances are completely predictable.

Central and downtown Seatlle is very gay...but I also mentioned the Greens - Enviro money, a rich younger population, a lot of it from new environmental business. When the gentrification came it drove a lot of the older populations out by driving the real estate prices (and taxes) sky high.

But yes, there is a huge population of gays in central Seattle.
