It’s like it had been divinely arranged, because it sure looks like the omission was made with the idea that it would “dis” Donald. Well, Donald sacrifices a couple minutes of his talking time for this. And it says more than his speech probably could.

Can’t imagine Hillary doing it. Can imagine tomorrow’s headline:

I’ve long been pushing the theory that we need our faith to be more bottom up, and less top down. Christ came as the humble servant, not the imperial ruler, and the time for the latter has not yet arrived.

I’m kind of big on the “Noahide law” with respect to norming of government responsibility, for this reason. Should we enforce decency? Yes. Should we enforce the Ten Commandments or even reverence towards specifically Christian elements like Christmas and Easter? No. That should be a responsibility within the house of faith, and will show by its merit, not by its force, what it means.

Your post is right about vets with (themed) headgear. But according to the link below, a veteran in fully civvies can salute as well, as of 2009. I do. Proudly.

If you know whether this has been amended, do advise, please.

This is from military.com but it cites the authorization etc

Law Now Allows Retirees and Vets to Salute Flag

Traditionally, members of the nation’s veterans service organizations have rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag only while wearing their organization’s official head-gear.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 contained an amendment to allow un-uniformed servicemembers, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during the hoisting, lowering, or passing of the U.S. flag.

A later amendment further authorized hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel. This was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14, 2008.

Here is the actual text from the law:

SEC. 595. MILITARY SALUTE FOR THE FLAG DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES NOT IN
UNIFORM AND BY VETERANS.

Section 301(b)(1) of title 36, United States Code, is amended by
striking subparagraphs (A) through (C) and inserting the following new
subparagraphs:
``(A) individuals in uniform should give the
military salute at the first note of the anthem and
maintain that position until the last note;
``(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who
are present but not in uniform may render the military
salute in the manner provided for individuals in
uniform; and
``(C) all other persons present should face the flag
and stand at attention with their right hand over the
heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should
remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it
at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart;

Note: Part (C) applies to those not in the military and non-veterans. The phrase “men not in uniform” refers to civil service uniforms like police, fire fighters, and letter carriers - non-veteran civil servants who might normally render a salute while in uniform

Apparently Obama would rather cup his junk than put his hand on his heart for the National Anthem.

I think the two go hand in hand, personally. We wouldn't NEED to enforce decency, if our houses of faith were stronger. Then again, God didn't create man, give him free will, and then say, BUT, I'm going to MAKE you be decent. Excellent topic, however! Nice to have a slightly more intellectual exchange on the subject.

We need to observe two different spheres, however well they fit at their point of meeting, or else we end up both whitewashing the state and dumbing down the church. Failing to notice this distinction is a long standing error of about 1700 years. Noticing it again will set up optimal ministry conditions for the church.

We can’t make persons be decent from the heart but we can insist that, even for the sake of self interest, they deal decently with their fellow men.

It’s basically the partition between common grace and saving grace.

Things that are of the saving grace economy shouldn’t be in the purview of any secular government.
