Memorial Day crosses honoring fallen soldiers removed from public property after complaint

A Memorial Day display featuring crosses to honor fallen soldiers was removed from public property in Georgia after someone questioned whether the soldiers were all Christian.

The 79 white, handmade crosses posted on public property along state Highway 92 in Hiram, Ga., were meant to represent the 79 Paulding County residents who died in America’s wars, according to town officials.

But the crosses were abruptly taken down last Friday after someone called Hiram City Hall questioning whether the cross is an appropriate symbol for the memorial.

Hiram Mayor Teresa Philyaw said the cross display, which she approved and planned, was never intended to be religious.

"It was never about religion -- it was just to honor them," Philyaw told FoxNews.com on Tuesday. "I was devastated when it had to come down."

Easy way to fix all of this.

Add in a Jewish Star and an Indian symbol (Tomahawk, Feather, Headdress) to the 79 crosses. That should cover the faiths of the soldiers honored.

Doubt that were any U.S. Moslem soldiers among those who died but if there were, they should be honored too.

And recall the gutless Mayor and City Manager for their cowardice.

“A” phone call? As in ONE phone call?

Mayor Teresa Philyaw needs to be booted out of office right now. Someone this weak should not be given any decision making responsibility.

Face it. The problem isn’t the complainer(s). It’s people like this mayor who grab their ankles as soon as some whiner speaks.

This is why America is in its death throes. There are no patriots who love America enough to stand up for her against tyranny. That’s exactly what this is. We’ve protected America from this scourge since its beginnings until we became so soft and comfortable with the freedoms that others died to give us that we forgot how we obtained them. Too bad for this lazy, cowardly, pc bunch of largely foreign interests. They’ll die in their ignorance along with what was once the greatest nation on earth.

Many Hiram residents felt the same way, and voiced their concerns during a city council meeting Tuesday night. The council voted unanimously to put the crosses back up.

Looks like the good citizens had the last word.
