Newt is bull headed and has a tine ear. In many ways he is a masterful strategist but it is best to leave him out of the publics ear shot. Make him a counselor to the President but for Gods sake do not put him on the ticket.
Newt knows where the keys are to the locked doors...
“A binding moral order grounded by the Natural Law”. Well, that is mighty vague.
If you say freedom above all is not compatible with it, then I would ask for some specifics: what morals, what order, what natural law.
Freedom should be at the crux of it, but then again, you haven’t specified anything.
In a study for the Heritage Foundation, written more than a generation ago, Russell Kirk/The Conservative Mind; defined and articulated 10 Principles of Conservatism, leading with:
“There exists a constant and enduring Moral order (right and wrong) that governs mankind, derived from the Natural Law. Kirk extracted this Principle from Plato. Other original minds include Aristotle, Cicero, the Scholastics, Locke, Hume, Berkeley, Burke and our founders, among them Jefferson, Madison and Randolph.
Conservatism is ageless wisdom while Libertarianism is a very recent faddish nostrum from the French Enlightenment, promoted by the likes of Diderot and Voltaire.
Consider the Ten Commandments as more than the foundation of Judaeo-Christianity. Aren’t they the rules of right and wrong necessary for order in society, to endure and prosper.
For Conservatism, freedom does not trump right and wrong (the Moral Order) while for Libertarianism it does.
I do respect the Ten Commandments, but in all fairness, you must concede that neither the term “conservative” nor the term “libertarian” can claim such purity as to escape their many modern applications.
No.
Brownback? The open borders Republican from Kansas? Why not just go for another Bush....
As Lord Halisham asserted, Principled Conservatism is attitudinal and behavioral in temperament. Unlike Socialism or Marxism, its focus is neither ideological nor religious. I simply used the Ten Commandments as an analogy to highlight the concept of right and wrong. Put it this way. Isn’t “ Thou shall not kill” intuitive because w/o this rule society would disintegrate? I have no idea what you’re getting at or referencing about purity???
Conservatism is a set a principles for “this world” and makes no claims to direct us to the” other world”. It is anchored by Ancient Greece, the foundation of western civilization, whose wise men included Pericles, Solon, Plato; among many others.
Cheney was selected knowing there was no way he could ever be elected president in his own right, due to age, health, etc. It seems to me that the one thing the Republicans never lack for is candidates to run for the nomination. Trump doesn't need to groom his vice president for that.
NEWt
No.
No. No. No.
NO NO NO NO NO!
Newt is too old. Put someone on the ticket whom we might ever want as President. It is stupid not to.
Newt is psychologically needy. He probably believes a lot of things we do, and he can articulate them. On occasion he stands up to public pressure. But he has always followed his p-nis and he wants love and adoration so badly he will do a global warming commercial with Nancy Pelosi because he loooooves attention. Who knows what these traits will lead him to do while Veep.
No salamanders.
“I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism.”
- Ronald Reagan
* God Bless Ronald Reagan who was fully entitled to believe whatever he wished, even if incorrect.
* Thomas Jefferson wrote that “All men are created equal” in the Declaration, a political document, while Plato, some 425 years before Christ founded the Catholic Church, defined the ‘soul’ as the entity that defines us and imprints each of us w/individuality and uniqueness; the astonishing miracle of creation. As such, Plato rejected equality/egalitarianism; another predictable faddish heresy from the French.
Jefferson was a great man yet he was incorrect, while Plato, a greater man, was correct.
W/respect, suggest you think for yourself, notwithstanding what others opinions are.
I do think for myself, and as a result I have formed opinions about libertarianism vs. conservatism that differ from your opinions.
Also, it made me laugh out loud to see you presuming to judge who is “correct” or “incorrect” amongst such great thinkers as Plato, Jefferson and Reagan.
Plato and Jefferson weren’t even talking about the same thing. Jefferson was obviously referring to equality of natural rights and protection under the law. Of course, he knew that all men are unique and therefore unequal in every other regard. The two positions are not mutually exclusive.
Have a nice day.
Hm..........apparently I struck a predictable nerve.
A couple of observations:
* It you were thinking for yourself, you wouldn’t be quoting Ronald Reagan to defend your ‘opinion’ of libertarianism.
* Facts irritate you.
* Agreed Jefferson, Plato and Reagan were great men yet w/o any disrespect, Ronald Reagan was hardly a great thinker.
Apparently making such distinctions is beyond your grasp.
* What Jefferson “said” about equality is plain and
w/neither equivocation nor rationalization. What he “meant” is the opinion of all who wish to express one. A dictionary will explain the difference between the words.
For the record, in our time, original minds such as Russell Kirk and Bill Buckley have challenged/disagreed w/Jefferson.
*Jefferson and Plato were referring to precisely the same thing; the soul of man!!!
It’s apparent you’re unconformable w/contrarian ideas and hostile to dissent. Do yourself a favor and jettison your pretensions and preconceived notions.
“Facts irritate you.”
Your extreme overconfidence regarding what you think you know does not appeal to me.
