As Donald Trump, the eventual GOP presidential nominee, sifts through a handful of potential vice presidential picks, one is rising to the top in Washington and conservative circles: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
"He does all the things that Trump needs," said a Trump advisor.
While in the past it was key for candidates to consider a geographical teaming, with Trump the issue is energizing the Republican voting blocks with a running mate that could also provide savvy counsel once elected.
Insiders said that Gingrich's assets are his close ties to conservatives and the pro-life movement and his years as a lawmaker who as speaker was able to cut deals with then President Bill Clinton on Republican issues like welfare reform and balancing the budget. They also note his strong relationship with marriage activists, though critics will likely pounce on his two divorces.
He has also run for president, in 2012. He won Georgia, his home state, and South Carolina in the primaries and was twice the front runner in the polls. He proved an able debater, also.

Pat Buchanan for VP!
Newt’s time has passed for a VP role. Chief of staff, definitely but not in the deputy role.
Beyond that, it is much too early for him to be naming a VP. Let’s get much closer to the actual nomination as it will only be from that point forward the VP actually matters.
GaySick, NO NO NO.
Rubio, rejected any conversations already.
Cruz, cold day in Hell.
Christi, no, better for AG.
I like Duncan Hunter for that or for Sec of Def.
LOL! That would be so funny!
It only brings Newt media and political skill
No VP in good standing for succession
No electoral college state
I’m ambivalent.
And I like Newt.....always have
You're down to successful Governors.
From a purple state.
Scott Walker, and who else? Surely there's another...
Sessions is our best senator but he’s not a presidential campaigner
He’s beloved in Bama and the south but he’s just not a hard charger for the cameras
Newt would be OK in my book.
I checked Rand Paul’s issues, they are almost the same as Trump’s...there are a few things I didn’t like, but do like it better that Newt...and I agree with Newt for Chief of Staff...
Governor Walker
Christie is NOT a supporter of our 2nd amendment rights.
Rand Paul was my first choice way back before Trump took control of the situation. I have always wanted a libertarian (or “Losertarian” as the once conservative but now asswipe Medved calls them) for president, but there is no way a libertarian could ever get elected except by way of the VP slot, so I’d really like to see that happen.
Many conservatives are suspicious of Libertarians being too isolationist or too peacenik, and too permissive regarding legalizing marijuana and some such things. I think these suspicions are unfounded. Libertarians just want to strictly adhere to the constitution.
No VP choice would be as strong an advocate for adherence to the constitution and for shrinking the power and role of the of the federal government than would Rand Paul.
Together, they might really eliminate some departments and fire the bureaucrats.
Please before I die!
“Sessions for HHS. He might be happier remaining in the senate. Maybe Trump can push to make him Majority Leader and retire McConnell.”
Absolutely a great idea! Now put on your thinking cap and give us a pick for a Paul Ryan replacement. Trump needs both Congressional leaders in his pocket to advance his agenda on a fast track. It will be wonderful to see the RAT “Amen Chorus” bleating about how “unfair’ the GOP is!
I know you love Trump and are a real patriot, but rupaul? Did you hit gravel on a tight turn without a helmet?
Everyone’s got warts, but here’s some Governors from purple states. The list is not inclusive:
Scott Walker
John Kasich
Rick Scott
Pat McCrory
Libertarianism is some 250 years old and was a spawn of the French Enlightenment(Liberte’). In contrast, Principled Conservatism reaches back to the first organized cultures/societies some 5000+ years ago. Libertarianism exalts freedom above all, while the bedrock of Conservatism is a binding moral order grounded by the Natural Law.
They are not compatible.
Sessions > Newt the NAFTA Globalist.
I’d rather see Newt as Chief of staff - much more power - and as Trump prefers to appoint others in the day to day nitty gritty, he’d be ‘acting Pres’.
Newt would much more powerful as Chief of Staff
He’ll be too old 8 yrs from now to take over as POTUS.
Duncan Hunter - of Calif, NOT UTAh, - has been been floated as VP - was first a business man, than joined to fight in Iraq and the ‘Ghan - came out a major - now 6 yrs in Congress.
Also comes over very well, personable etc - and would plenty young to go on as POTUS
Palin as Energy Sec...she’s an expert on that (look up what she did in Alaska on that, if you’re ignorant of it. And she straightened out BOTH dems and pubbies)
Cruz as AG - like him or not, he knows the law.
Rudi G as Homeland - he doesn’t suffer muzzies gladly...

They're not going there to design a future for the Republican party.
They're going there to straighten sh*t out.
Newt is the best choice, by far, for this dangerous mission.
It is pretty obvious now to a lot of people who supported NAFTA that it has not worked out for America. Foreign entanglements...suck.
