Gun Ownership: A New Medical Illness?
lifezette.com ^ | 5/20/2016 | Kristen Fischer

“It does feel rather invasive when I’m asking the question,” Stein told LifeZette. She said the American Academy of Pediatrics requests that doctors ask the question, which is on intake forms for new patients and regular checkups. She does so in order to comply.

“It has become more prevalent,” she said. “You feel uncomfortable whether you do it or not. It truly feels like you’re getting into the parents’ business.”

Stein says it’s a Catch 22: She wants her patients to be safe, but she doesn’t want to invade their privacy. The information she collects is not shared outside of her practice. If she has to ask about guns, she would rather be able to distribute information on gun safety for kids — instead of just being forced to check off a box.

Lie. The one Doctor who has ever asked me grew up with my mom and uncle, knows my uncle used to have his FFL and grew up hunting our our farm so he knows but when he asked, I responded with “I moved here from CA, what do you think?” He laughed and said “I’ll put down “no” and end of discussion.

Also, my daughter will never be alone with a pediatrician and teach your kids they don’t have to answer.

Medical imperialism. They want to be involved in everything. By hyperbolic logical extension one could claim that EVERYTHING you do affects your health.

People accept this. This is where you get all these “safety” laws. Anything you do might hurt you and the govt might have to cover the medical costs so it’s okay to force people to do all sorts of things to protect their health and it means your neighbors can decide that you need to wear a seatbelt because it might cost them a nickel if you get hurt and it’s for your own good..... yada yada yada.....

A nation of whining crybabies who have thrown all responsibilities to the govt. Wah wah. You upset me. Wah wah. The govt will punish you because I feel uncomfortable. Wah wah.

I plan to be in “late youth” until I die. I just turned 68 this month.

You’re not under oath folks.

Telling the truth is honorable, but if a burglar asks if you have any jewelry, do you feel obligated to answer yes? The doctor is acting as an agent of the government. Look the doctor straight in the eye and say ‘No, I have no guns’. In at least one database you’ll be listed as gun free, and you never know when that might help down the road.

When my son was little we had the “questions not to answer if teachers, doctors or anyone else ask them” discussion.

"Guns, Doctor? My Dad said tell anyone who asks about guns to try breaking into our house some night, and they'll find out."

LOL! Funny about that. Me too. Of course we probably need to define “middle aged older”. What the hell does that mean?

I was asked this and the pediatric doctor actually said she was embarrassed to ask it. My wife and I rehearsed this and said "NO, but we probably should. I'm from CA and we don't have guns out there".

The truth is that we have a gun trust, so legally, and ETHICALLY, we can say: "NO. WE DON"T OWN ANY GUNS....because the trust "owns" them (inside an LLC).

If the Doc paraphrased differently, we have rehearsed a different answer:
Doc: "Do you have ACCESS to firearms"
Our reply: "Our neighbor is a cop, lives alone, and leaves his gun on his nightstand so I guess we could bonk him on the head and take his, otherwise NO".

Oh bullshit, Doc, and you know better - or should.

What do you think the whole push for electronic records was all about?

The way the question usually is asked ("Do you own a gun") has a simple answer:

I don't know ANYBODY who owns >>A<< gun.....

Any reply from me will be contingent upon the doctor answering if he/she keeps items of value in their homes. For example, “do you have any gold or silver jewelry at home?”.

Ask this too:

Do you own a gun?

Why not?

Whose responsibility is it to protect you and your loved ones?

Will you shirk your responsibility onto another gun owner?

She said the American Academy of Pediatrics REQUESTS that doctors ask the question...

So, doctor...why not say, "No thanks. I deny your request."

Hey Doc, let me help you understand a few realities they didn’t teach you in med school.

None of the views of the human body in my 8th grade biology text contained a gun.

Therefore your question has NOTHING to do with medicine.

Next, have you noticed that nearly all violent attacks occur in “gun-free zones”?

That’s because they’ve violated the first rule in security and that is to NOT advertise whether you have security measures in place, or what they might be.

Since this is decidedly NOT a medical question and I continue to follow the first rule of security, can you recommend a Doctor who still practices medicine?
