Most Americans want the government to pay for health care, poll says

A new Gallup Poll shows most Americans want the government to take on a bigger role in health care.

More than 1,500 people from across the country were surveyed, and 58 percent favor replacing the provisions set up by the Affordable Care Act with a federally funded health care program.

The ACA, or Obamacare, lets Americans buy insurance through the federal government, but the survey shows most citizens want the government to just pay for everything, or at least that’s what they’re saying now. In recent years, Americans have waffled on whether the government should pay their medical bills.

Polls show that Americans largely said the government had an obligation to provide health care during the George W. Bush administration, peaking at 69 percent in 2007.

After Obama was elected, support dropped off and opinions became more evenly split. But backing for a single-payer plan appears to be on the upswing. I’ve been sending out doctor bills since 1979, and I have absolutely no doubt that this is true.

That 47% includes people collecting SS and Medicare which they were forced to pay for from their payroll tax. Doesn’t mean those retirees are going to support socialism.

In the 1960s in college, I was fortunate to enroll in a really good Philosophy course, where we mostly discussed topics, the emphasis being logical outcomes.

One discussion was what would happen if medical advances occurred that allowed massive improvements in health care, but the cost of many of these cures was so expensive it overwhelmed every other expense. Was it ethical to have such cures if they'd only be available to those wealthy enough to afford them?

That situation is what we've got. Modern medical care has gotten so expensive that it's not realistically in the reach of everyone. The only answers are to ration it out and decide who should live and who should die. Determinations will be made which involve who is worth saving.

What's the answer? Stay on the edges and be really self aware about any medical care. It'll save you until your time is up, maybe.

Re: Medicare recipients not supporting socialism

Most already do. Medicare Part A is what those deductions pay for. It covers hospilization and not much else.

Most Seniors pay extra and sign up for Part B (all health care) and Part D (pharmaceutical). Then they sign unto a plan that manages their choices. All of this is voluntarily signing up for a government program for the financial advantage. They have socialized medicine, and happily so, because they save money.

A nice thing about Part A is, it takes you off the hook for the Obamacare penalty.

Actually, the headline is not quite correct.

The government has no money whatsoever that it didn’t take from working Americans, so the headline should read that most Americans want to send the bill for their healthcare to their neighbors.

It took FOREVER to find out that Part A is all a Senior needs to cover Obamacare minimum requirements. Anyone only doing Part A has to know what they’re getting in for. Medical treatment is expensive. Considering only having part A is only for folks who don’t go to doctors and don’t take medicine at all. It’s best to have money aside for things like broken bones, ambulance/EMT, any disease that needs medical care.

I have a co-worker who says she wants government healthcare ... and for the government to pay for all of her retirement.

Just wait until a faceless bureaucrat on an 800 number with an alias tries to “help” her with nicey nice language, no power and an “us against them” attitude really just assaults her very being for as much as two hours.

Medicare, insurance companies, drug companies all do it.

I tried to get a prescription for Donnatal, a very old medicine people have used for decades. Insurance does not cover. Brand name, $1,000.00 across the counter. Generic $250. Used to be $6.00 few years ago. May have found it cheaper afte 5 days, many 800 calls and a wait of 15 days if they can.

We want this?

That would be my wife and me, and you;’re right in our case. We just wished that we had been able to “opt out” of SS and invest that money for ourselves.
