A recall so serious automaker warns: Stop driving these [Subaru] cars NOW

If you have a newer model Subaru Legacy or Outback, stop right now.

The automaker is recalling more than 48,500 vehicles over a potential steering column defect so serious, they shouldn't even be driven to a mechanic.

...

"The steering column in your vehicle may not have been manufactured to specification," Subaru says in a customer service message online. "If this condition exists, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels, increasing the risk of a crash."

Bought our first Subaru 2016 (Forester). I did a lot of research and I found it to be just what we wanted at a price that fit.

We LOVE it.

When my wife asks me to hold or carry her purse, I never mind. I always say “I’m man enough to carry a purse.”

I’m also man enough to drive a Subaru.

Subaru 360 with suicide doors?

Wow! I'd totally forgot I drove a Subaru 360 van on campus delivering A/V equipment!

Hats off to Subaru for doing this. They’re towing the cars to dealers free of charge. Any Subaru dealer will suffice.

I think of how many people end up dying before any of the Big Three acquiesce to a recall. I wonder how many accidents (if any) precipitated this?

Lesbians, Bernie supporters and other assorted liberals hardest hit. (don’t flame me, I’m reporting my own observations gleaned from years of living and driving here in lefty la-la land)

i know you are and i know that is probably true in commierado too but we live there and own an outback and forester and will buy another when we decide the 2003 need replacing.probably not to many foresters with a gun bag and 300 rds of 9mm in case i am out and about and decide to hit the range.

Kind of makes sense. A whole lifestyle built around faulty directional control.

“The automaker issued a recall covering 48,500 examples of the 2016-2017 Subaru Legacy sedan and Outback crossover, all of which have manufacturing dates between 29 February 2016 and 6 May. Many of these vehicles are still on dealer lots.”

doesn’t appear to involve any 2015 subarus as the NYT would have you believe in their usual faulty reporting.

>> the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels

Ironic given the target market.

Amazing considering how little force it actually takes to turn the steering shaft with power steering.

I can turn the big tires on my truck with it running merely by reaching under the fender and turning the u-joint which is about 2” diameter with my hand.

The hardest part is not losing hide on the inner fender.

Yes very ironic. If you drive a Subaru Outback people may think you are gay. Worse yet, they may think you are a DemocRAT.

I don’t care what all you haters say. I am a hetero Conservative male and I LOVE my 2012 Suby Outback! It’s by far the best car I’ve ever owned It’s especially great in bad weather. It’s a shame that this one problem will probably destroy future Suby sales for a long time to come. :(

I bought one of the first year’s Subaru. Absolute junk car. Everything was wrong with it. My - then = ex thought it was cute. I learned never to buy cute. She gave it up when at 9 months pregnant in a snow storm at a major intersection the entire transmission fell out of the car. Dealer refused to make good on it. Wound up in court. PIECE OF JUNK!

I have a Forester that's a few years old and I really liked it, especially the fact that with good snow tires, it would go through absolutely ANYTHING in our Central NY winters.

Except for one thing. That vehicle has a voracious appetite for brakes. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. we had to put new brakes on it.

I fed it its last set of brakes this past spring. Bought a new car and am selling this.

Scary, tho, to hit a deer. I had visions of him coming in the car on his back, kicking with those long legs + hooves. We got a good horn-dent in the roof and a damaged front corner.

Our main car is a ‘14 Subaru Outback. Good power, steady in bad weather. Carries a ton.

Plenty of room under the seat for a cabled lock box to secure my Glock.
