A recall so serious automaker warns: Stop driving these [Subaru] cars NOW

If you have a newer model Subaru Legacy or Outback, stop right now.

The automaker is recalling more than 48,500 vehicles over a potential steering column defect so serious, they shouldn't even be driven to a mechanic.

...

"The steering column in your vehicle may not have been manufactured to specification," Subaru says in a customer service message online. "If this condition exists, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels, increasing the risk of a crash."

We are on our 4th and 5th. Would have been 2nd and 3rd, however both were taken out by confused elderly drivers leaving medical appointments where my wife works.

The reason I say that is the cars just last. They don't last very well when they are the bumper between an out of control car and a parking garage concrete wall. Insurance never covers the loss.

I am currently driving a 2003 Forester. Plan to keep it for another 100K or safer barrier impact, which ever comes first. I just follow the maintenance schedule and it keeps on running reliably.

We live on a ridge and it is 355 feet strait up to the house. Keep mounted snow tires for quick change out during the winter months.

We are neither LGBT or liberal. Both vehicles sport Oath Keepers and NRA stickers. We would add Trump, but do not want them keyed.

In our rural neck of the woods, every other car is a Subaru. You are not going to be happy during the winter months without AWD and winter tires.

So that’s the problem....why Subaru drivers can’t get out of the passing lane, while they travel at 45MPH.

I officially killed one prius. Sadly, it took out my BMW convertible which was totalled. I loved that car. The prius went flying, and her insurance covered it all. Thankfully the driver was unharmed.

The only thing missing is a window sticker from the local PBS station.

...turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels...

Oh, that's what that's for! I use mine to rest my latte while I'm texting somebody. But yeah, now that you mention it, there does seem to be some sort of relationship between turning that thing and the direction I'm going. Who knew?

BTW, love my WRX.

I’m not sure that’s a real Subaru commercial.

Bad news for women in flannel shirts.

As a Minnesotan, I just can't...stop...laughing.

It was 35 degrees this morning.

*I* (conceived, born, and continuing 100% MALE) am wearing a flannel shirt...

Looks more like a print ad, the kind placed in “Bull Dyke Quarterly”. Heh.

“...turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels...”

Sound a lot like voting for Republicans.

Loose nut behind the steering wheel?

Well, if it were the transmission, they could've just renamed it the Jenner /off-color joke>.

We call them the Toyoda Pious.

Consider THAT one *stolen*.

...and which model chassis? The "SR" (self-righteous)?

Really? Whoda thunk that! Why can’t I just drive in straight lines??

Read the thread. Subarus have a reputation for having a clientele who are not straight...

Apparently Outbacks do well in collisions with deer. We hit one while driving home from California last year in my mom’s ‘15 Outback. All it did was make a couple small cracks in the grille and dislocate the lower bumper slightly, which popped right back into place. When they took it in to the dealer to have it inspected, the guy couldn’t even find the cracks!

I drive one myself. ‘99 Outback Legacy with a stick-shift. Great car.
