Ted Cruz poised to challenge Trump in Texas

Ted Cruz isn’t giving up.

While Donald Trump dispatches three advisers to Texas’s convention in Dallas this week and makes a pitch for party unity, his team will be running up against a Cruz operation that is still maneuvering to stuff the state’s delegation with allies the senator could call on to snub the presumptive nominee.

“We have a busy weekend planned,” said a source familiar with the Cruz campaign’s plans.

Cruz is scheduled to deliver an address at the Texas convention after a week of hinting he could jump back into the presidential contest and urging activists to thwart the New Yorker’s takeover of the GOP’s policy platform. And despite dropping out of the race more than a week ago, the vanquished presidential contender has deployed at least one paid adviser to the Texas Republican convention – Tyler Norris, his state director. (Trump has three advisers: state director Joshua Jones, deputy director Eric Mahroum and Houston-area director Kayla Hensley.)

It’s not just Texas where Cruz is still playing.

The senator’s team remains active in several of the other eight state conventions selecting delegates this week – from Nebraska to Oklahoma to Nevada. Those conventions, along with party meetings in Arkansas, Florida and Wisconsin, will be selecting 389 national delegates, nearly a sixth of the entire convention.

If Cruz were still working to send the nomination fight to a contested convention, this weekend’s delegate hunt would have been the main event – the largest single delegate selection weekend of the primary season. Now, it’s become a display of Cruz’s last hardcore bastions of support and a forum for Trump to appeal for unity.

More like the new Mitt Romney. And we can’t even get rid of the old Mitt Romney.

Yes, his is. We called it FUBAR. Cruz just got his ass handed to him in Nebraska, too. Hell, Douglas County is Omaha and that is Omaha plus a number of small towns around it to include the jerk Sen. Sasse. I had no idea one of the Ricketts was the Governor. I graduated from Nebraska Omaha as the Army sent me there. Great people.

He's got staffers and I guess he's still paying them for a while.

He had a dream that he'd unexpectedly do well in some state even after he withdrew and that would pull him back into the race. That didn't happen.

The rest is may just be Politico stirring the pot, trying to create controversy and attract attention to their website.

“Donald Trump’s a bigtime underdog in this race.”

that’s not what the polls are showing, Austin; the polls are pretty much showing Trump is in a dead heat against Crooked Hillary nationally, and Trump hasn’t even really started to hammer her. Crooked Hillary is a weak candidate on multiple levels, so weak she’s struggling to beat a 74 year old socialist from Vermont who’s got 10 times the amount of energy Hillary has.

More than 10,000 Republicans will gather in Dallas this week for their every-other-year
state convention — the largest political gathering in the country — where they will approve
party rules and a platform, elect a chairman for the state party and pick delegates to the
national convention.

I’m Texan......I’ll vote for Trump......I’ll vote AGAINST Ted Cruz in his next election for Senate just like I have before even if it means voting for his Democratic opponent!!! He makes me sick.....he gives me the willies...he’s smarmy....he’s creepy.....yuk!!

I suspect most of the Cruz supporters in Texas will flip to Trump...They picked Cruz instead of Trump but I can't believe they are ready to give the nod to Hillary just to appease Cruz's temper tantrum...

Everybody should take a deep breath. Cruz is just wanting to influence the platform, not steal the nomination. I would rather he influence it rather than Mitt or the Bushes. No?

Now he is actively working for the benefit of Cankles. Will Reince issue the “knock it off” call?

I am by no means eight Ted Cruz support although I once was.

The expression “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings” is true and I can’t blame Ted Cruz for understanding the fat lady has yet the sing.

I believe Donald Trump has made it impossible for Ted Cruz to affect his winning the nomination because he has won so many delegates out right that have to vote for him on the first vote. I believe there are some delegates who are bound to vote for him on the first vote who won’t but I also believe that Mr. Trump will have enough of a pad to withstand the mutiny of those delegates.

I do not see what Cruz is doing as evil but I do see it as ill advised. I see no way for him to be successful in any way. It will not give him more influence at the convention, the best way to get influence would be to pledge his delegates to Donald Trump. It looks like as long as Mr. Cruz thinks there’s any possibility one in 1 million perhaps chance of opening the convention he will do all he can to make it happen. What I believe Mr. Cruise fails to realize is that in an open convention he only has half the votes of Donald Trump and he is hated even more than Trump by the GOP elites.

I do not believe he can be successful and I believe it will ruin his political career. Had he cooperated with Mr. Trump when he ended his campaign he probably could have had a Supreme Court nomination, with today’s actions he will get nothing out of this convention.

Good.

The Libertarian convention starts 05/27. So time is very short for that avenue too.

Looks like they are probably left with running in select states claiming to attempt to throw it to the house, while actually working to keep the gravy train rolling under Clinton.

“When did we start posting Politico feeds as if it were the gospel and to be taken with an ounce of credibility?”

I read the article. It seemed to be quite well sourced. Would you care to quote the parts of the article lacking credibility and explain why?

BTW, JimRob must have thought the article was credible given his comment about this post:

“FUTC!! Now moving towards total betrayal.”

“Cruz won Texas BEFORE all the BS he pulled in many of other states...Hopefully, the people of Texas recognize what an a$$ this guy is and handle him accordingly...

Several Texans have moved to Trump and have talked about how they were fooled by Cruz....”

Even then, it wasn’t that impressive of a win, even though it was one for the history books.
