London mayor slams Trump's 'ignorant' view of Islam

LONDON (AP) — London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Tuesday slammed Donald Trump's "ignorant" view of Islam, after the Republican presidential contender suggested Khan could be exempted from a proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

Last year Trump proposed "a total and complete" ban on foreign Muslims entering the U.S. "until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on."

Asked how that policy would affect London's first Muslim mayor, Trump told The New York Times that "there will always be exceptions."

But Khan said "this isn't just about me — it's about my friends, my family and everyone who comes from a background similar to mine, anywhere in the world."

"Donald Trump's ignorant view of Islam could make both our countries less safe — it risks alienating mainstream Muslims around the world and plays into the hands of the extremists," Khan said in a statement.

Khan, the London-born son of Pakistani immigrants, was elected last week by a wide margin after a campaign that saw his Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith accuse him of having shared platforms with Islamic extremists.

Khan, a former human rights lawyer and Labour Party lawmaker, accused Goldsmith of trying to frighten and divide voters in a multicultural city of 8.6 million people — more than 1 million of them Muslims.

The mayor said Tuesday that Trump and people who agree with him "think that western liberal values are incompatible with mainstream Islam - London has proved him wrong."

Trump said he was "happy to see" Khan's election and hoped "he does a good job."

The mayor declined to lend Trump his support.

"I'll be backing the Democratic candidate — Hillary Clinton, who I suspect it will be — and I hope that she trounces him," Khan told the BBC.

Why is it that America always risks alienating the world
when the world should be asking itself why they have
alienated the US...

The muzzies don’t get it...Trump is not banning muslims, he is banning muslim terrorist. So until a process is in place to properly identify the terrorists from the non-terrorists then we should have the right to limit or prevent these potential risks from reaching our shores.

Only 5 days in office, and this guy has already started to play an imaginary race-card and meddle in US politics.

Yep - he’s a leftist, and a Muslim.

He got a lot of things right, not just his stand on Muslims.
Go Trump!!!!!

I remember London thirty years ago and nobody would believe how it has changed. Same for Birmingham and other major cities in England. Thousands of Brits move to France every year because “England isn’t England anymore.”

I understand his ideology. It is a violent, world-domination ideology that seeks complete control over all aspects of life, including political, and is cleverly disguised as a religion.

I had an ignorant of Islam before 9/11. Since then I’ve educated myself about it. In 1996, when a local paper ran a story about local Muslims and a CAIR spokesman said the plan was to bring Sharia law to the US, I laughed. They’ve been stating their intentions from the get-go. And the Pew Research survey that found that 15% of US Muslims think suicide bombings to defend Islam is sometimes justified is truly frightening (I suspect the number is higher as some Muslims would likely hesitate to give that answer - social desirabililty and all that).

Most moderate muslims I’ve known will say the 911 terrorist attack was wrong but then they try to justify it.

Yup. Cognitive dissonance in action.

Most moderate muslims...

There is no such thing.

...will say the 911 terrorist attack was wrong...

And had they stopped right there, it may have had some credibility.

...but then they try to justify it.

And they always have a "but", and that is the point that they should be thrown out of the country, back to their damned sandy hell-holes...period.

To hell with islam, America first, America always.
