In Deeply Divided Chicago, Most Agree: City Is Off Course
NY Times ^ | MAY 6, 2016 | MONICA DAVEY and GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO

The people of Chicago are deeply riven by race, class and neighborhood, distrustful of the police, fearful of the growing rate of violent crime and united chiefly in their disapproval of the mayor’s performance and their conviction that the city is headed down the wrong track.

These are among findings of a new survey by The New York Times and the Kaiser Family Foundation, which polled residents of a city that has been upended in recent months by revelations of questionable actions by the police, threats of a teachers’ strike, a school funding crisis and an uptick in violence.

The poll finds broad discontent with the police and those charged with overseeing them, particularly among African-Americans. Residents expressed concerns about racial bias in shootings by officers and many show ambivalence about whether calling the police will ease situations or not make a difference. Document: Chicago Poll Results

Residents of Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city, appear to have lost faith in many of its essential institutions, including the police, courts and the public schools.

The sharpest levels of discontent appear among black residents on the South and West Sides. When it comes to hopes for young people, satisfaction with city services and — especially — expectations about interactions with the police, the divide between black and white Chicago is striking.

“It seems like the police can do anything and get away with it,” Enix Daniels, who is 50 and black and lives on the West Side, said in a follow-up interview. “There are no repercussions. If we do something, we have to pay a bond before we get out. If they do something they get to sit at their desk.”

Sure but the one thing they won’t due is put Republicans into office.

Not even on the off-chance that the Republicans might do a better job.

Windy people should have voted for Bernard Epton for mayor in 1983! Now, it’s “too late”.

They got careless in 1994 and put in a temporary Republican to replace Dan Rostenkowski.

Come the next Mayoral election, if a leftist diversity candidate is elected, White liberals will be on the menu.

The Marxist Lesbian head of the Chicago Teachers’ Union would have beaten him in the last election if she hadn’t have gotten sick.

I live in rural Will County, IL but commute into Chicago during the week for work. I work in the financial district near LaSalle and Jackson.

Today is a beautiful day, so I decided to grab my sammich and walk down to Buckingham Fountain during lunch to see if the fountain was turned on yet. I've done this walk hundreds of times over the years I've been working downtown (26) and have never had a problem.

Until today.

During my walk back, two "urban youths" (read that black males in their late teens perhaps early 20's) tried a bump and pick on me at Jackson and State St. This is where one bumps into you and the other tries picking your pocket. As soon as I felt the bump I put my left hand over my wallet.

"Excuse me sir, can you ..." I put my hand up to stop him and shook my head no at him.

"This is why black people hate white people you ......" One said as the other attempted to intimidate me while others around us who were also stopped at the corner waiting to cross looked at what was going on.

At that point I figured if I was going down I was taking one of them with me so I raised up my fist and lunged at the one who was talking. The two cowardly urban youth's turned and ran from this 54 year old white man.

In the 26 years I've been working in downtown Chicago, this is now the 4th time that I've had to defend myself from these street urchins. It's getting ridiculous.

The worst part is, when crap like this happens, all people do is stand and watch. No one comes to anyone's aid anymore.

a city which, if your plane stops there for fuel or to load additional passengers, you don’t dare get off

yes, I’d say there’s something wrong in ChiTown

yes indeedie

I wonder if they’ll ever figure it out, tho? So far they’re still voting for Obama and other destroyer-types

Oh please such a gross exaggeration.

O'Hare is so far outside of Chicago it's really in Chicago "in name only."

Planes don't "stop for fuel" only anymore. If a plane lands in Chicago to pick up additional passengers, that means some are getting off, others are getting on and the plane pushes back from the gate again. Passengers typically aren't let off a plane IN ANY CITY in this scenario unless that plane has a layover as well.

Chicago's dangerous enough that you don't have to exaggerate.

Don’t insult the rats, it’s not their fault. It’s all graft and corruption.

I used to work downtown. I am retired almost four years now. It is hard to believe that no one will help, anymore but it is true. Disgusting! Walking down Adams or Monroe may be safer than Jackson. One or two streets over makes a difference in this crazy city. I am sure you figured that out already. It is a beautiful day today in Chicago. Sorry about those Obama sons of so and sos.

As is the case with the largest cities, there are those of means who prefer city living, maintaining and defending their lifestyle in protective islands and producing much of the tax base for the whole. When that bleeds out, the usual result is, well, Detroit. Detroit, OTOH, was barely a patch compared with the population of Chicago.

Nah, she is a useful foil to trot out for the cameras, but she has no real public support. Most people don’t like Rahm, but NOBODY likes her.
