Tow truck driver said he refused service to woman because she supports Bernie Sanders

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a woman’s car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.

Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.

When he saw “a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff” he said he told the woman, “very politely,” that he could’t tow her car because she was “obviously a socialist” and advised her to “call the government” for a tow.

"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."

Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders’ supporters.

Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.

“I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views,” Shupe said Wednesday.

The woman’s mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.

"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."

Below is Kelle McWade’s public post:

Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).

Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."

Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.

"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.

IRS is already doing that.

I don't believe- yet - that they are targeting me personally for my political or any other views. Maybe this year's I could be audited but I can prove everything; sometimes that isn't enough, and I sure don't need the hassle.

Tney did target the Tea Party which was egregious and Lois Lerner is getting a pass.

“I have a Trump sticker on my car, if in need of help should I expect the same from a Sanders supporter?!”

Ha! That’s a good one. A Sanders supporter owning a small business... you’ve got quite an imagination!

I believe you are right about political views not being a protected class.

I am sure that liberal businesses try to screw over conservatives plenty, but do it at their peril,we have voices way beyond what we had even two years ago. Screw us,the lose lots of business, look at Fox and Rupert baby’s suicidal moves.

With(assinine) statements like that maybe you should be over at the DU

And what happens when some business denies you service for your political affiliations? Is it wrong for liberals but okay for conservatives? You can't play that game because it will come back to bite you hard.

You make a better influence by taking the moral high ground (i.e. politely let them know what your beliefs are and then provide amazing service). What the tow truck driver did just makes more enemies.

You are right. I didn't think to ask my lawn guy yesterday his political views. Or the guy who is supposed to come back and fix some more things wrong with the house.

When some people start spouting lies, it raises my hackles, but some people you can't appeal to with reason and credible sources..

If as a free citizen in a public venue I were the first responder to a known socialist needing CPR, I would walk and not run, first considering whether they were still young enough to change their ways.

Socialists frequently state the need for previous generations to “die off” with or without help, before their ideological nirvana can be realized. They’d best learn how to get through life without help now; turning from ticks into dogs may take some practice ;)

You are right, and perhaps more right than you know.

This story is making the rounds on other sites, including some news sites. And what's being highlighted is the tow truck driver's Trump connection, not the woman's supposed inability to pay.

Will one story like this hurt Trump? Nope. But many like it will have an impact. That's how propaganda works.

A REALLY class act would be “do you lack funds, oh you do? let me give my church a call and see if they could help.”

One lived out example is worth a million words of preaching.

Bernie is there because churches, back in FDR’s day, already were jumping for “let Uncle Sam do it” bait.

I like this idea better and completely agree. Knowing that you disagree and should be angry at them, but instead go the extra mile will speak volumes just as you say.

Because it will win them to believing the Lord’s way is the best way, too.

Bernie is a false fill for the hole that the church (which in turn being blessed by God) should be a true fill for.

So, is a tow truck service any more or less of a “public accomodation” (where right to refuse service doesn’t hold) than a bakery?

And it should be a caution for Christians who are jumping on the Trump support bandwagon. I think he’s probably going to be fine and dandy as a secular president. I’m not expecting Trump to be my godfather or my personal financial mentor, however. That answers to a higher authority.

It might take quite a lefty conviction to maintain that tension, but I wouldn’t say it is utterly IMPOSSIBLE.

You'll probably get the same from a Sanders supporter...in addition, they'll call some friends and come picket your house, try to get you fired, and key your car!

His logic was perfect...hers was flawed. "Call the government," indeed.

Typical news. No description of her accident. No mention of hiring another towing company.

And everybody suggesting this young female having cash to pay for a tow———good grief!

Any one that provides me with any service does not know my political affiliation.
I don’t wear it on my sleeve or on my bumper or in my front yard.

Which only drives leftists closer together with a very plausible excuse for having done it,

It is to laugh!!! Leftists don't do "plausible." They don't act nice to you because you do...and they don't get pi$$y because you do.

They do as much as they can get away with and then a little bit besides.
