Sure looks like Kasich’s goal was to stop Cruz

With the news that Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) will suspend his fruitless campaign for president Wednesday at 5PM it’s worth asking the obvious question: Why now?

Kasich lost every single caucus and primary over the past several months except for his home state of Ohio. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has more delegates for the nomination than Kasich and he’s been out of the race for weeks. So why stay in as long as he did just to drop out when the race finally comes down to just two candidates?

Let’s focus on a few key moments of the past several weeks that could lend one to believe that Kasich’s main goal was not to win the nomination (obviously) and not to stop Donald Trump for locking up the nomination. No, it appears Kasich’s main goal was to stop Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and he succeeded.

Kasich was Trump’s ‘ground game’.

Trump negotiated a deal with Kasich sometime back for him to stay in.

Trump’s ground game was much better than Cruz’s ground game.

My take on what happened the last few weeks is that a lot of voters who were vacillating between Cruz and Trump but wanted the GOPe to lose were shaken after Wisconsin and the delegate antics that went on in Colorado and other states. They saw the GOPe was working to help Cruz to get to an open convention. This was not to have Cruz as the nominee but to stop Trump.

Those voters who were vacillating came to realize that if they did not back Trump over Cruz then the GOPe would win. Once the shift started it was rapid.

In many ways I feel sorry for Cruz and many of his ardent supporters. However, Trump, had to be the nominee to defeat the GOPe. O

Hello Niel Bush and endless funding to beat Trump? The GOPe didn't want Trump and they funded Cruz to tune of 60mil trying to make it happen.

hello. they did not want either. They hate Cruz. They wanted to force a contested contention where they would oust both and offer a new choice.

Nope.

Both Kasich and Cruz continued running in the hope that Trump wouldn't hit 1237 on the first ballot. Second and subsequent ballots, who knew? Cruz hoped many delegates bound to Trump on the first ballot would defect to him on later ballots. After all, didn't he know enough to court them at their caucuses, unlike the overconfident Donald? As for Kasich, it was well known that the GOP-e hates both Cruz and Trump, so he thought maybe he stood a chance of emerging from the chaos as the compromise nominee.

Indiana's result has made a first ballot win for Trump extremely likely. Therefore, both Cruz and Kasich have dropped out. Obvious, no?

In 1860, the first Republican president was nominated on the fourth ballot. But they didn't have primaries back then. Now they do. Today a candidate chosen chosen in that manner would be seen by many as illegitimate. After all, Trump would be going in with the most votes, so why shouldn't he be the nominee, even if he didn't get a majority of the delegates on the first ballot? It's not good for a party's nominee to be seen as illegitimate. Not even if the rules were followed scrupulously.

As for Sen. Cruz...(note, I am dropping the #daddycruz title because it’s over)...the last couple of months all I ever heard from Cruz was “Donald this and Donald that...” There was no vision...at least that was reported from the campaign trail. Trump did knock Cruz about, but also offered his vision in several salient bullet points...So much so that his crowds would recite them and yell them out during his rallies. That is means the message is getting through...that is powerful persuasion. Sen Cruz was not able to do that type of persuasion and instead was left with attacking his political nemesis. To use unwashed out here in the hinterlands, it proved that Trump was living rent free in Sen. Cruz’s head and affected his campaigning. There was no Cruz vision.

Hmm... and Trump is not an insider, if true sound like GOPe plan to me.

Or.....could be that with Cruz gone, Kasich knows there is zero chance of a contested/open convention and he can no longer "justify" staying in w/o making himself look even more ridiculous.

Ted was going for a long shot and Kasich was going for a clandestine, elevate then ditch Cruz, super betrayal shot.

Don't know if your slant or mine is the correct one but both make at least as much sense - we need to focus on facts instead of "could be" and turn our attention towards grinding Hillary into oblivion.

....Trump voted for and supported Hillary, Reid, and Schumer, the most extreme left wing communist in congress.

Might as well, he’s and extremist leftist himself...! Supports single payer, supports queers, supports pedophiles, supports big gov. spending, supports illegal immigration when it benefits him, supports planned parenthood, supports crony capitalism, esp. if it benefits his Trump empire.

Support extreme left wing judges, just to name a few.

And Calgary Ted Bush is a Canadian born, Goldman Sachs financed, globalist fraud. Not that that ever bothered Cruzlims. I would rather vote for an American. I will vote for an American again in 2018 which means I won’t be voting Cruz for senate. I must admit that witnessing the post train wreck expression of die hard Cruzlim butthurt is more amusing to me than I had dared to hope. Thanks.

***the three amigos under discussion undoubtedly loathe each other***

I despise Kasich as much as I despise Hildy...! ...and I still wonder who was financing his continuing futility campaign. If Trump names Kasich as VP I will be sorely challenged to vote for him.

I would crawl on my knees stumps over broken glass through the fiery pits of hell to vote for Trump to defeat Hillary. President Hillary would mark the official end of our beloved American Republic.

Evidently you haven’t noticed that Cruz suspended his campaign, this isn’t about Cruz, it’s about stopping a demented sexual pervert from getting elected as president.

Not only is Trump mentally ill and sexually perverted, he’s a leftist.

Kasich (and earlier Rubio) staying in is proof positive the GOPe was never backing Cruz.

Cruz tried to thread a needle/out manuver them and win anyway.

Didn't work, but credit Cruz for trying against near impossible odds.

And honestly-When I saw the riots in So Cal and the one with kids in the sombraros carrying the Mexican flags flipping off and yelling eff you to people going to the Trump rally- I said to my family that I thought the rioters had just handed the GOP nomination to Trump.
