European nations that turn away refugees could be forced to pay roughly $300,000 in fines for each individual rejected, European Union officials are expected to announce Wednesday.
The plan is part of the European Commissions plan to overhaul its current asylum rules that neared collapse last year after more than a million refugees and migrants flooded across E.U. borders, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.
The reshuffle is aimed at alleviating the strain on frontline nations, including Greece and Italy, that have grappled to absorb the heavy incursion of migrants.
Officials who saw the proposal in advance said the fine would act as a sanction on nations that refuse to adhere to the E.U.s asylum system. While the exact penalty is still in flux, a diplomat said that it would amount to hundreds of thousands of euros.
The United Kingdom has the option to opt out of the new program.
The Guardian reported:
Under the latest plans, E.U. countries would still be responsible for housing refugees that arrive on their territory, preserving a key principle of existing asylum rules known as the Dublin regulation. Unlike under Dublin, refugees could be dispersed around the EU via a corrective fairness mechanism in the event that countries that are the first arrival point are unable to cope.
The penalties are intended to incentivize nations to abide by the currently failed migrant quotas.
How are members of this European Commission seated?
How many divisions does the E.U. have?
Sounds like the EU elite WANT the “Brexit” measure to pass. I can’t think of a better thing for proponents to campaign on than this.
Next: Eastern Europe heads for the e-u-xits, and we witness the second falling of the Third Reich.
When will the EU become a sick memory? Will the euro countries wake up to this travesty of a “government”?
Uh...actually it’s going to be blown up in small chucks over time.
Simple don’t pay and send the heads to Brussels. Cheaper and an effective deterrent.
Tell the E.U. To go to hell
Get Britton out.
How are they gonna collect?
Were I the leader of one of those EU countries just threatened by this, particularly if my country bordered Belgium, I’d set up a bus circuit that constantly collected the refugees at my Southern and Western borders, and conveyed them non-stop to the Belgian border. If Brussels wants those refugees so bad, they can have all of them.
Greek Bailout thru the back door.
The USA and NATO are now bodyguards for the implantation and protection of this new EU proto-fascist state growing in Brussels.
AFAIC, NATO outlived its charter 20 years ago.
There is an issue of trust, and the motivation for not inflicting this fine is a transparent attempt to manipulate a vote.
I wonder how shrill Brussels will get, trying to inflict their misbegotten b.s. on other people? If they continue they will be handing Europe to Putin on a silver platter, and that would be a very bad thing.
A VERY QUICK way to get any country wishing to preserve one last shred of sovereignty to quit the EU!
Unelected bureaucrats telling people, and supposedly sovereign nations, what they have to accept.
All while the "capital" of Europe has large areas w/I its borders that are beyond control of Local LEO.
The absurd irony of the post-modern elite.
You are right about the absurd irony. The "politically correct" dolts always remind me of the Academics that Dean Swift's Gulliver encountered on the Island of Laputa.
So absolutely correct.
That is exactly who they are.
I wrote an essay on it once called "The Confederacy of Experts"
Each member state gets to send one commissioner (not elected by popular vote) to Brussels. Since the number of states has ballooned to 28 they started making up the stupidest purviews to justify the positions.
If I ever saw a policy that was more likely to create unintended consequences I can only compare this to Rome’s decision to bring the Goths into Italy to become soldiers in the Imperial army.
How will they enforce it?
This may be a final straw in the rationale for the European Union, and cause a breakup of it.
