Trump: 'I'd have to think about' Cruz for Supreme Court
The Hill ^ | 5/2/2016 | Jesse Byrnes

Donald Trump had a tepid response when asked if he would consider GOP presidential rival Ted Cruz for the Supreme Court, should the businessman win the White House.

"I don't know, I'd have to think about it," Trump told the Daily Mail in an interview Monday.

"There's a whole question of uniting and there's a whole question as to temperament," Trump continued. "He's certainly a smart guy, but there's also a temperament issue.

"He's got a tough temperament for what we're talking about," Trump said. "You have to be a very, very smart, rational person, in my opinion, to be a justice of any kind."

Trump told The Washington Post that he plans to announce upward of a dozen judges from which he'd pick to fill Supreme Court vacancies.

Cruz, a former Texas solicitor general, has been mentioned by Republicans as a potential replacement to fill the vacant seat previously held by the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday described such a scenario as scary.

For his part, Cruz insisted in March that he was more focused on nominating justices to the court than becoming one.

Trump made his comments to the Mail as he and Cruz battle in Indiana heading into Tuesday's primary in the Hoosier State, a key opportunity to pick up more of the delegates needed to secure the nomination.

Trump is right: Ted’s a mess.

"". . . there's also a temperament issue."

Damn right, Ted does not play well with others and is absolutely not suited for the Supreme Court. A Federal judgeship where he can play God but still be overruled, maybe, but not the USSC.

He should just pick someone less flamboyant who would vote a certain way on court like Alito.

I resent Cruz & Beck for making Mike Lee join the clown car.

Cruz doesn’t realize what he has done to himself

Six months ago, I would have been, great, Cruz would be great a this

Now I don’t know, I am with Donald on this. I would have to think about this as well

Like FR stopped talking about the Dixie Chicks and then they went away... Donald needs to stop talking about Cruz.

There is no need to speak his name.

He probably seriously considered him early on...Anytime someone says he has to think about it....only means he’s not blurting out how he really feels.

He’d be kissing the pretty ladies on the court, and they’d be flinching. It would be amusing.

But still: No.

Cruz would be a great choice for the Supreme Court. The problem is that Hillary is going to select the next Supreme Court Justice. She says she thinks Obama would be an excellent choice.

Trump gave a good answer. Substantive, and inconclusive.

I don’t think we need any more power-mad liars on the Supreme Court. Let’s pick a real conservative with principles, who can be trusted to do the right thing.

I don’t see why anyone owes Cruz anything at this point. Let him find a real job somewhere and earn himself a living.

I used to think that Ted would be a good and reliable choice for the Supreme Court. I no longer believe that he does have the temperament for the job.

I totally agree. It's time Trump start issuing "no comments" to questions that doesn't pertain to his agenda.

The question in itself is designed to keep Cruz's name in the spotlight and create a rift on Capitol Hill if Trump gets elected. If Cruz would have conceded after 04/26 and endorsed Trump, selecting him for SCOTUS would be a no-brainer.
