This is from last year, but thought it was appropriate to post, especially considering the way California just denied a day set aside to honor the great American, and actually called him a racist. By the way all three of Wayne's wives were hispanic.

Duke was/is the biggest movie star of all time. The days of one guy being a hit machine the way he was are over. I’ll have a Duke marathon that day.

The Quite Man with Maureen O’Hara. Doesn’t get much better, except for maybe In Harm’s Way.

PRNewswire reports he's respected not only a talented movie star, but also "as a loving father, a fisherman, a horseman, a hunter, an adventurer and an unabashed patriot of the United States of America."
And also, believe it or not, an avid collector of Dolls.

About 20 minutes from my house is John Wayne Marina.
“....John Wayne was a frequent visitor to Sequim Bay aboard the family yacht, the “Wild Goose.” John Wayne was struck by the pristine natural elegance of Sequim Bay and believed it was the perfect location for a marina. An ideal destination for water adventurers, the marina stands on land donated by the late film star in 1975.”
I think that is where I will celebrate his birthday. If the weather permits, I’ll be on the bay in my boat. It’s also a great place to bring in Dungeness crab. ;>)

In June 1966, John Wayne stopped by to visit Special Forces Operational Detachment A-323 at Camp Trai Bi, Vietnam when he was in country gathering details for his upcoming movie "The Green Berets." He had a beer with us and visited for a while before he departed. He fit right in; he was one of us.
On May 26, I will join two other A-323 veterans and hoist a beer or two in honor of "The Duke." It's too bad we don't have Falstaff beer to do it with.

Texas - The state that voted for Cruz. Yeah, that’s a real John Wayne memorial.

I think it is every year, not positive but sounds that way here:
But it doesnt much matter that Wayne was born in Iowa and went to USC, or that he never lived in Texas and filmed only 2 of his approximately 140 movies here. Hes now an honorary Texan.

I haven’t gotten drunk on Duke’s birthday in a long time. Might have to schedule a bender this year.

Happy Birthday, Duke! In your honor, we’ll be watching True Grit tonight and the faithful Turner Movie Classics has been showing you all day long.
A faithful American, a great actor, and an American icon. Rest in Peace.
