Obama Puts His Weight Behind Smart Gun Technology
New York Times ^ | APRIL 29, 2016 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR and ERIC LICHTBLAU

WASHINGTON — President Obama will use the power of his office to push for adoption of so-called smart gun technology that could eventually limit the use of a firearm to its owner, the White House announced Friday morning.

The move is intended to allow Mr. Obama to confront firearms violence in the face of fierce opposition to broader gun control measures. But critics of smart gun technology, including some police officials, are expected to fight a proposal that they see as unproven and an unwarranted restriction on the freedom to use firearms.

The initiative was unveiled on the White House website, along with a report from the administration’s law enforcement agencies concluding that the government should do more to spur development of the technologies. To that end, the Defense and Justice Departments will develop criteria for gun manufacturers who want to sell smart guns to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The administration will also offer cash prizes and grants to gun manufacturers to spur development of the technology, which is intended to make a gun useless if someone other than the owner tries to fire it.

unfortunate headline

O has no weight left in American politics

he’ll be well advised to go home to Indonesia (or Kenya) in February

The thumbprint reader on my cellphone cannot identify me after I have scrubbed my hands, emerged from the shower, or if extremely cold. Yeah, good luck entrusting that moody behavior with something truly essential like a firearm.

I think this falls under the left’s propensity to chalk up “talking about it” to “doing something about it”.

Maybe he should work on being a smart president instead.

Make sure you plug that gun in nightly for recharging and OS upgrades.

Electomagnetic pulse caused by detonating a nuclear device high in the atmosphere.

It renders all electronic technology unusable.

I’m just barely comfortable with the complexity and reliability of semiautomatics (as compared to good old revolvers). No-way, no effin’ way I’ll ever sign up for a “smart” gun. Too many additional failure modes for no significant gains.

No such thing as a smart gun. Rather it is a gun that may not be so smart when needed as all this fancy shi! fails when it is needed. No person should have a potential piece of junk. Ze batteries, da ar dead.

Trump for President.

After ordering the tides to recede, Obama should proclaim the existence of Smart Guns that fire only when held by someone with an IQ over 100. Goodbye 95% of crime.

Or he could simply order inner city violence to stop. Damn that was easy.

What in the heck is an EMP

Electromagnetic pulse. Specifically, it refers to a massive geo-electric current induced by something called the Compton effect, from a gamma-ray burst. The quickest way to create massive man-made EMP is to detonate a nuclear bomb with certain characteristics high in the ionosphere (about 40 miles up). Look up Starfish Prime on Google. They blew all the generators and telephone relays in Hawaii the last time this was done out in the Pacific, in 1962.

Not all. It mostly affects stuff connected to the power grid.

I used to design devices for military satellites that had to withstand a 1 megarad radiation dose from an atomic bomb, so I have some knowledge of what this stuff does to electronics.

Many cars would still be running, for example, in contradiction to the movies and fiction books about EMP.

Why in the world would anyone want a gun that can be disabled by EMP?

Now that is interesting to know.

I had understood that only those electronics in Faraday cages would still operate.

Still though, I don’t want a smart gun. I don’t want my gun thinking, I only want it to obey.

They’ve been trying for ‘smrt guns’ since the mid-70’s. They didn’t work well then, and they don’t work well now.
