RNC official: Donald hitting 1,237 won't matter
CNBC ^ | 4/28/2016 | Lori Ann LaRocco

Donald Trump may be the only Republican presidential candidate who can realistically hit the magic 1,237 number for the majority of delegates, but according to a senior Republican National Committee official that does not mean he will become the GOP presidential nominee.

"Even if Trump reaches the magic number of 1,237 the media and RNC are touting, that does not mean Trump is automatically the nominee," Haugland said. "The votes earned during the primary process are only estimates and are not legal convention votes. The only official votes to nominate a candidate are those that are cast from the convention floor."

It might not matter to this particular official, but it should. Denying events does not keep them from happening and bearing their consequences.

Which way into the wood chipper - head first or feet first?

You want a (armed?) revolution, RNC? Go ahead.

Thanks for the reply. All of that is not news to me, except your opinion that Trump could win on a second ballot. That is unconventional - pun intended.

I am interested in knowing as Political Junkie has said that the party could try to disqualify delegates. How does that happen?

Dearest rnc “official”: you need to resign in disgrace or immediately be fired.

The strategy was to use a rule 16 subsequent sections to say that states with open primaries or non-partisan primaries could have their delegates disqualified, if they were found to be from districts that crossed over. They would look for delegates from districts where vote totals exceeded statistical Republican turnout, and then say that the delegate is disqualified because Democrats sent them.

They would have to find something either wrong with the delegate, or the process that got the delegate chosen.

But that is a death knoll of the RNC tries anything so foolish.

The reason I believe Trump could still win on a 2nd ballot is simple. If he is very close, say within 20 delegates, I believe two things:

1. Most people would see the futility of denyoining someone that close and with the huge electoral lead he goes in their with. They will know it would divide the party and cause the GOP to lose in November...and I believe enough could turn to Trump to make the difference.

2) I believe Trump will be able to persuade a very close vote over to his side.

As I say...I do not ecxpect that to be necessary. I expect Trump to arrive at the convention with far more than enough.

And I say this as a long-time and committed Cruz supporter.

it’s just that I am more committed to the country and the future for my 11 grandkids.

Trump has a history with a lot of differing positions...but the message he has campaigned on, and the position on his own site, if implemented will be far, far better than and DNC win. We cannot...we MUST NOT Allow a 3rd Obama term.

What Cruz can do after Indiana, is to step up for the country and support the man who will be the nominee. Best for the GOP (without the “e”), best for the nation by far...and ironically, I believe in the end, best for Cruz...either in 2020 or 2024.

If he does not...he will have lost my respect because he will then only be pushing it for, IMHO, hos own interests in the very off chance, and the absolutely contentious chance that he can turn over the will of the people voting in the 2016 GOP Primaries.

Cruz should have conceded yesterday based on Trump's dominating performance over the past two weeks. There's no way the GOP can nominate someone who's only win east of the Mississippi is Maine. Indiana represents a forlorn hope for his increasingly necrotic campaign, but unless he wins IN convincingly he needs to bow out while he can still do so with some dignity and grace.

If he insists on dragging things out until the convention he'll be damaging not only the party but any future political aspirations he may harbor as well. Committing political suicide in this manner will only prove that he's either completely out of touch or has been acting under orders all along.

Agreed.

I admire your ability to see the bigger picture. Now if Cruz were to win the nomination by some fluke, I would support him. I wouldn’t be thrilled, but I would do it - not too much to get excited about. But for Cruz supporters to go to Trump, you can share the anticipation of great changes to come. As I said before, I don’t think Trump has all the answers, but I sure as hell am going to give him a shot.

Will Cruz support Trump? To me, this is where the rubber hits the pavement for him. Does his professed faith include humility? We shall see.

Agreed 100%.

We shall see.

But I know that myself and my family...who have supported Cruz, will most definitely be voting for and supporting Donald Trump against Hillary.

We had two million or more conservative stay home last time and not vote for Romney (who was about my 4th choice), and so we got a second Obama term.

A 3rd Obama term in the form of Hillary will help destroy this Republic all the more.

People have to rise above their emotion and their rhetoric and keep their eye on the real goal.

It has taken us 40+ years to get down this hole we are in...we are not going to turn it around over night.

but Trump’s policy statements, as laid out on his own campaign site...are close enough for me to say, if implemented, would make a=n excellent start.

You represent my years in the same way...21 to 80, 59 years.

I expect to change my registration for the first time.

This will mean losing most of my social life too. Local Republican executive committee, Republican Liberty Caucus, republican Mentors Club etc. I believe that registration in the party is required for most of my activities...

The party has definitely left me.
