To The Editor,
Two weeks ago the Stand Against Racism program presented a panel of black activists at the Honors College to talk about their experiences with prejudice. During the Q & A period an audience member asked the panelists what they wanted from whites who wanted to be allies to people of color. They didnt have to think for more than a moment before the answers came pouring forth. This is what I managed to jot down (paraphrased):
Come to our events.
Share our social media postings and flyers.
Link your organizations with ours.
Dont come to us looking for recognition for being good (given your pre-existing white privilege).
Fight white supremacy.
Listen. You dont have to inject your own ideas all the time.
Dont think your view can represent our reality.
Dont think you can make pronouncements on black suffering.
Dont expect blacks to educate you about their experiences; that is the ultimate in white privilege. We are too busy dealing with the effects of racism to educate you. Educate yourself. There are many books, articles, magazines, movies and other resources.
Be active, not passive. Interrupt racism as soon as you hear it. Even if it doesnt offend you, if it offends your black friend, just say something to the other person that makes them uncomfortable and makes them think.
I wanted to pass this information along, since I had wanted to know the answer to the question, What should I do to be an ally? and there may be others who had that same question.
Sincerely,
Melinda Nielsen
And give us money.
M-O-N-E-Y, honkies!
“Stand Against Racism” ? It’s a Black KKK rally.
“Send us money,give us stuff.”
Clean up your own act. Start with Chicago. Then I’ll consider your suggestions for improving my behavior.
Good grief. With so many rules, I ain’t doing it!
You forgot “and shut up.”
the takeaway: They think they are entitled to their own reality.
Actually, their answers reveal, from their perspective at least, that coexistence is impossible.
“Dont expect blacks to educate you about their experiences;”
—
Alrighty,then-——sounds good to me.
.
“come to our events”. I assume that means the events that are labeled, “Black....” something or other. How about not having events that are racist?
Recognition for being "one of the good whites" is the main reason guilt-ridden progressives attach themselves to the #BLM movement. Virtue signaling.
How about a word of advice back at them?
Adopt Western Culture. You can call it “acting white” if you want, I don’t care.
Once you do that, no one notices your skin color, and most of your grievances simply vanish.
Be active, not passive. Interrupt racism as soon as you hear it. Even if it doesnt offend you, if it offends your black friend, just say something to the other person that makes them uncomfortable and makes them think.
If my view cannot represent their reality, how the hell am I supposed to know if they're offended?
The comment letters are priceless and they have only just started.
Aka, "White-'splaining."
I don’t have the time to listen to bunch of losers try to explain away their bad behavior.
