What’s the problem? No beer, no need for a fridge.

The government imposed a four-hour blackout in eight states starting Monday and said the measure will last 40 days.

Sunday, the electricity in my home was out for four hours, as the power company scrambled to replace the four-home transformer. In 28 years at this address, that was the first time the power was out for more than an hour (not counting hurricanes that cause the power to be out for a week); the hour-outages happen perhaps twice a year, when a suicidal squirrel trips the transformer's circuit breaker. My first assumption, upon the electricity's return, was that the food in the refrigerator was lost, but its insulation seems to have worked, with nothing in the freezer thawed, and nothing in the refrigerator spoiled. I wouldn't want that to happen every day, and I suspect Venezuelan refrigerators are of older technology and more likely to cause food spoilage, as would have been the case with the previous refrigerator at my home.

So with diminished refrigeration, this can only worsen the food shortages. The venezuelan people chose poorly and they were screwed by their thieving, psychopathic politicians. Just like the US voters have done the last 8 years.

Free food spoilage, courtesy of the government. Praise Citizen Maduro!

So,... you do things the Vintage way. Everything except lights is hand cranked, you use kerosene lamps. Welcome to the 19th Century

Hey, they may have some difficulties, but you have to admit that they got rid of the evil income inequality!

You jest, but that is precisely how food aid used to be given. Do you remember “government cheese?” It used to be a point of shame, not a pride...

What a Brave New World.

Oh, I am NOT jesting.

There SHOULD be a stigma to getting a handout.

I know the ultimate answer is “socialism”, but is there any info on “why” the country’s electrical system is failing?? Educated techs “getting the hell out” of Venezuela?? Can’t get/afford spare parts??

My guesses:

1) Any parts manufactured outside Venezuela (most of them) need to be bought with hard currency.

2) Too many job slots were filled with government supporters rather than competent workers.

3) Theft of copper and other stuff to sell.

The government MUST prioritize welfare benefits to their underclass supporters over ALL else, otherwise they will be overthrown the next day. As long as the underclass is willing to riot and burn against anyone threatening their benefits, the government will stand.

I wish I could remember where I read this but the drought is causing the hydroelectric dams to have lower electricity production.

I believe their power is via hydroelectric dams and right now they are in the middle of a severe drought.........

A bunch of years ago I vacationed in Honduras when they were experiencing a year long drought which resulted in electricity rationing. Fortunately they had the money to purchase their electricity from neighboring Guatemala......
