Fridges go off as Venezuela power-rationing hits

Caracas (AFP) - Fridges zapped off in kitchens across Venezuela as the government turned off the electricity supply to help ease a power shortage that is worsening the country's economic crisis.

It is the latest drastic measure by the government in a crisis that already has Venezuelans queuing for hours to buy scarce supplies in shops.

The government imposed a four-hour blackout in eight states starting Monday and said the measure will last 40 days. The states of Caracas and Vargas had also been on the list for blackouts but were spared at the last minute.

The timing of the switch-off caught Pedro Tarazona by surprise at his shop in the town of Santa Teresa del Tuy southeast of Caracas.

The fridge was full of meat when it suddenly stopped working. So did the electric fan.

The machine for processing bank card payments wouldn't work either without power, so at least two customers left without buying anything.

It just dawned on me why someone would want to have your fridge talk to the internet.

If the connection is broken, will the fridge not work ? I guess this is something important to look into when internet-connected appliances become more of a reality.

I saw the Ted Baxter show last night, and during the Waters World segment it occurred to me that if he truly wanted to make a point, Waters would be handing all these proud socialists One Way Tickets to Venezuela, so they could enjoy equality at it’s finest.

Interesting to see just how long this economic collapse is taking and how relatively calm it is

Many predict a Mad Max situation here in the cities the first day the shelves are bare and assume you’ll only have hours to “bug out” among a hail of gunfire

I back bread lines too.

If we had bread lines today, you’d see people lined up for two city blocks in every neighborhood waiting for their bread. Then you’d KNOW how much the Obama Economy really sucks.

As it is we give them SNAP cards that scan at checkout, and no one is the wiser. And Obama can go right on lying about 5.2% unemployment. Out of sight, out of mind.

I know the ultimate answer is “socialism”, but is there any info on “why” the country’s electrical system is failing?? Educated techs “getting the hell out” of Venezuela?? Can’t get/afford spare parts??

I like your thinking.

Maybe EBT cards should only be used at stores

that are run by a PostOffice-DMV consortium.
