Why is Africa so poor while Europe and North America are so wealthy?

A few years ago, two economics professors, Quamrul Ashraf and Oded Galor, published a paper, “The Out of Africa Hypothesis, Human Genetic Diversity, and Comparative Economic Development,” that drew inferences about poverty and genetics based on a statistical pattern.

The world’s most genetically diverse countries (using their measure of what counts as genetically diverse) are in sub-Saharan Africa, which is the world’s poorest region. The least genetically diverse countries are in places like Bolivia, which have low incomes but not as low as in that region of Africa. There’s an intermediate level of genetic diversity among the residents of the middle-income and rich countries in Asia, Europe and North America.

Genetic diversity arises from migratory distance of populations from East Africa. Countries in east Africa have the highest genetic diversity because this is where humans evolved. Populations that settled in other parts of the world descend from various subgroups of people who left Africa at different times. Thus, these groups are less varied in their genetic profiles.

Ashraf and Galor put this together and argued that this is “reflecting the trade-off between the beneficial and the detrimental effects of diversity on productivity.” Their argument was that a little bit of genetic diversity is a good thing because “a wider spectrum of traits is more likely to be complementary to the development and successful implementation of advanced technological paradigms,” but if a country is too genetically diverse, its economy will suffer from “reduced cooperation and efficiency.” Thus, they wrote, “the high degree of diversity among African populations and the low degree of diversity among Native American populations have been a detrimental force in the development of those regions.”

Also people that evolve where there’s a winter have to plan, learn how to eat in winter.

Which is why the Neanderthals probably had higher IQs than Africans. They were one of the smartest apex predators to ever walk the face of Earth. But the modern myth that the Neanderthals went extinct because of climate change is laughable. They didn't just slip on a little bit of ice and fall off the face of Earth. They were pushed.

It’s the people living there

It’s entirely possible that Neanderthals didn’t just die out, but rather ceased being a distinct group due to genetic swamping. They interbred and blended into the larger group. How many Europeans today have some Neanderthal ancestry? It’s like the smaller tribes that ceased to exist in the southeast. Either they joined with larger tribes or intermarried with European settlers. Either way, their genetics live on in nominally white and black people, as well as within those other larger tribes.

True. However, it is the closest thing they had if you don’t count Sheba/Nubian.

"I've met a couple of Africans here in the States and they're very proper. Industrious too. Quite a contrast from Black Americans."

Thirty years ago when I worked in West Africa, I found my interpreter, Mr. Dau, to be the most intelligent man I had ever known. Mr. Dau had degrees from several European universities and could discuss any subject you cared to discuss in five different languages and discuss it with almost unbelievable clarity and understanding. One day when we were in a discussion that I soon found to be over my head, I made the comment, "Mr. Dau, I've lived the last fifty years in the United States and I have known countless African Americans, but I've never before met an African American as intelligent as you are."

Mr. Dau smiled and replied, "Why do you think we sold them to you?"

For me, that was a paradigm moment when the world suddenly became a bit clearer.

My theory is that the constant hot weather contributes to people not being as ambitious and hard working as people in more northern climes, who must deal with a lot of cold weather.

Maybe it could be extended to environmental changes which cause alternate periods of plenty and want, which compel the population to plan for the lean periods. Egypt is pretty warm, but it depends on periodic flooding of the Nile for its agriculture to flourish, right? Egypt had to develop a system of agriculture and storage.

Don’t look now, but there are countries in Africa with more economic freedom than we have. They are headed in the right direction. It won’t be too long before Europeans and Americans are headed there.

Another factor is that Africa seems to be a hotbed for various infectious diseases.

That's mostly an effect, not a cause. Unlike here, there is a primate reservoir for some of those diseases there. But the main cause of infectious disease is poverty and corrupt government.

Didn't realize that. What about the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers? Remember the world's first Civilization developed in Ancient Sumer.

God —> liberty —> property —> pursuit of happiness

Maybe.

Try this on for size:

The people who were content (happy) living in mud huts eating bananas, bugs and beasts stayed put.

The people who weren't happy, the people who wanted more, left looking for greener pastures.

The genetically content were happy with their lot in the new territory stayed. Their siblings who who were genetically discontent kept moving, anywhere they lived wasn't quite right.

Not happy having to chase down game they domesticated animals. Not happy to range far and wide for a few nuts and berries, they invented agriculture. Not Happy with mud and wattle, they invented brick, and not happy with brick, they figured out how to hew stone.

Not happy having to make everything they needed they invented trade.

The rest is history.

Africans are a happy people, they sing and dance for everything.

The bane of progress is satisfaction.

The trend toward socializing America began in the 1920s when the intelligencia and entertainer (White Russians) left Mother Russia to escape the Tzars. These people were communists and did not want to give up their ways. They took advantage of all America had to offer, unlike Russia, and have been hard at work to make America like old Russia.
Listen to Bernie Sommers and Hillary...they are not part of the intelligencia, but are using their words.

Why is Africa so poor while Europe and North America are so wealthy?

wealthy nations have all 4 of the necessary and sufficient traits: rationality, private property rights, capital accumulation, technological progress.

Why is Mexico and Central and South America so poor that their populations have to feed off of the American taxpayers. Socialism and Communism doesn’t work. Especially when fascist dictators are in charge as we have seen here in the country over the past seven and a half years.

Right now, you are correct. Western Europe has been invaded by a group with 7th century values and brutality.
We are beginning to have the same thing. An area in San
Antonio is now filled with Muslims and the rudeness and lack
of American English is very evident.

“Why is Africa so poor while Europe and North America are so wealthy?” because Africa is plagued with the lazy ignorant maggots they are now sending to Europe so don’t worry it won’t be long until the curtain comes down on our EU cousins.

Saw a very interesting documentary on Neanderthals. Apparently they were even able to do some very basic smelting. The researchers, using tools etc. available to Neanderthals were barely - trace amounts - able to duplicate what the Ns had done and that was of course with probably much more knowledge of the smelting process than was known thousands of years ago.

Wish I could remember where I saw that documentary.
