A 3-day-old baby was fatally mauled by a pet dog in front of the child's parents at their Mira Mesa home Thursday night, San Diego police said Friday.

The parents were in bed, watching TV, with their newborn son and pit bull-mix dog when the mother coughed, startling the dog, child abuse unit Sgt. Tu Nguyen said.

The dog reacted by biting the baby, he said. The parents pulled the animal off and raced the child to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

The only dogs that scare me are the ones with teeth.

When people ask “Does your dog bite?” the proper answer is “Do you see teeth?”

Any dog can.

For any reason, even one totally surprising and incomprehensible to us.

It is *our* duty to prevent them from doing so.

Scary, huh?

Prolly can do it cuz we share the same sense of humor.

Or it’s a warp in the time-space continuum.

Sure. But you add the will and the way of the broader pitbull class of dogs and you have very significantly upped the risk.

I have met countless Pits, over the years.

Came away with slobbery clothes and nothing else.

One dog has nipped me, when I was only 8 years old, a Border Collie bitch with pups hidden nearby.

The only other dog who ever acted like a quite capable psycho was a Lab.

The only dog who ever lunged at me while waiting at the vet, was a Golden Retriever.
If Odin had not blocked him with his own body, I have no idea what would have happened.

FWIW, when I’m in the pet stores, the only dogs I’m wary of are the smaller, seemingly nervous breeds.

I find it hard to believe a dog turns aggressive on being startled.

I'm sure it can but probably rarely. I think sudden unexpected sounds can even cause humans a fight or flight reaction while sleeping, resting etc.

Your anecdotal experience, along with ignoring the larger, statistical data, ignores the issue of “the way”—or how much better equipped and likely the pitbull class is to inflict maim or kill if triggered.

No, I have done no such thing.

Why do you suppose I advocate brutal punishment for those who cause harm to others, by not properly tending their dogs?

*That* is the *only* way this kind of travesty/tragedy will cease.

When the owners -know- they will pay just as harsh a penalty as their animals.

Their dog once bit a stranger who aggressively approached my mother while out on their twice-per-day walks. She otherwise loved visitors, going to the bank drive-up (they gave her treats), and going on long car rides.

What was the outcome? Civil action? Out-of-court settlement? Putting the dog down? Inquiring minds, etc.

Regards,

My white Angoran slept in the crib with all my babies......never an issue but we used a SIDS pillow...the cat would jump up in there and curl up and purr in the corner

When A was all swole up the cat would go nuzzle her belly and make biscuits or lay on her tummy....they know trust me

We had a big Dobie then and he was good with babies but we watched him close

I had pitbulls and American bull dogs but never allowed them unsupervised around any little ones much less a baby

Bully breeds just zone out when in kill mode and they aren’t super bright..kinda dull...pits have terrier which gives them a brain but can give them a ratter tenacity and temper

I’ve got a 140 pound uncut Rott now who goes everywhere with me

I trust him around little kids prolly not a baby or toddler......but then again I might if he’d had shown himself worthy

Rotts like Shepherds and other German guard breeds feel a compulsion to be the pack head of security even though my Rott Becket is rollover tits up submissive to me on approach

He’s fierce if he senses something not kosher

We have a 90 year old mentally deficient aunt in the home with the mind of a child....gets around on a walker ...has very low velocity abnormal cell growth in lungs....he guards her bigtime and my wife too

Unknown males simply cannot approach

I think this cough startles dog and it attacks baby story sounds very odd

That an ill tempered dog pit or not killed a baby doesn’t surprise me sadly

No you didn’t. My accusation is that in part what you are ignoring is that pitbull type dogs have far more of both the will and the way to maim and kill than most, smaller, and weaker jawed dogs.

Dobermann jaw strength is far greater than that of Pits.
So is GSD’s and Rott’s.

The difference is, IMO, the “quality” of some of the people [i.e., stinking thugs] who own and breed them.

Rott and dobie insurance limitations too. Along with the “way”, there is the “will” via breeding and the numbers speak for themselves.

Mindsets like yours maim and kill too many people each year.
